Alice: In Bed

this set made me first love alice. i love the distorted look, the colors, and of course, the expressions.

today's lesson: Square vs. Rectangular pixels.

Ok where to start. Let’s start in the beginning. Normal NTSC televisions have a 4x3 aspect ratio..ie 640x480 resolution. But that's a lie. In actuality televisions have a resolution of 720x480(rectangular pixels). What rectangular pixels mean is that the pixel isn't a square but a tall rectangle (slightly taller than wider). So all televisions (not the new HDTV of course) have 720x480 rectangular pixel resolution.(really it's 486 but lets not get into that) and when this resolution is viewed, it appears to be in the 4x3 aspect ratio. Ok where were we? Ok. so when taking a screen shot from a video signal of 720x480(generally dv footage) and bringing that to the computer and into a program like Photoshop, the 720x480 image is actually interpreted as a 720x480 square pixel image(making the image seemed stretched horizontally). So to correct this problem, the easiest way is to just resize the image into a 4x3 aspect ratio of 640x480. In the same sense, if you are doing a project in dv rectangular pixels and want to import an image into your footage, you will want to import a 4x3 image at a resolution of 720x540 square pixels. The image will be interpreted in your program as 720x480 rectangular pixels, and keep the proper aspect ratio.
