While I understand the nonsensical plotting & presentation of props should suggest there is no theme, strictly speaking, the dominance of water strikes me as being symbolic of birth &/or baptism. The fact that our protagonist emerges as an adult would seem to strike a blow against the tabula rasa, as well nod to the "collective unconscious" of Jung. Though all that dithering, in the end, plays second chair to the freckled & lanky splendour of Opale's physical form.
