Anybody have any idea why mice (mine, at least...like, the ones I'm hunting in my apartment, not pets) seem to not like butter?

Cause a) butter is REALLY good, and b) they like cheese.

Thoughts?

Oh, and though this is in Silliness, don't think for a second that it's not dreadfully important.

Mice are very conscious of their cardiac health. Try using Parkay®.

Personally I say go with the traditional bait: a massive wedge of swiss cheese...carefull arranged in a trap involving ironing boards, an anvil, gunpowder, string, scissors, candles, fireplace bellows and possibly a falling axe. Play the first 30 seconds of "Bus to Beelzebub" from Soul Coughing while the trap plays out. Either you'll get that mouse, or oddly enough you'll end up with a small explosion going off in your face and leaving your hair blown back and your skin comically charred as the little mouse snickers and runs away with your cheese wedge.

Good luck.

First off, PEANUT. smile

Secondly, I'm not trying to catch them. Just noticed that they go after everything - EVERYTHING - else, but not butter when I get too drunk cooking and leave the butter dish with the top off.

Prolly should've explained that bit.

Maybe they don't take a lot of butter, just enough for their morning muffins and you hardly notice the loss....

Maybe you should make sure there are more crumbs in your butter dish next time.

But, so . . . Are these mice you speak of, like, actively repelled by butter? Or are they just indifferent to it?

Butter as a mouse repellent might get messy, but I'd bet it'd be an improvement on the messiness of squished mice in traps.

Coat the kitcken floor in butter and setup a video camera. You'll be able to track the mouse and what it does both in video and on the floor and if for some reason you can// you should have a great little video to send into America's Funniest Animals and maybe you'll get $1,000 for your troubles (this = lots of butter to replace what you used and what the mouse has eaten)

It sorta is, if you squint while looking at it.
