Funny.

Say you have 5 kindergarten teachers in your school for half day kindergarten. If you make it full day kindergarten, you have to then have ten teachers to handle the same amount of children. Ten teachers = $400-900, 000. Part of the no child left behind crap was making all kindergarten full day, but of course it is entirely dependent on funding.

Yeah but ALL of those kids will move up to first grade. If there are 5 first grade teachers what's the difference? You're still going to have to group toe morning and afternoon students together for their full days of 1st grade.

The difference is the five extra teachers you need for the kindergartners. The first grade teachers were already there, but the kindergarten teachers are not. No matter how you look at it it's still five extra people you have to hire and another five classrooms you have to find.

If you need five teachers for half day kindergarten, that's ten classes they teach in a day. If you make it full day, you still have to teach those other five classes worth of kids.

I think we're not getting each other but I don't know where we're losing it *runs off to draw a diagram of her thinking* I'll be right back!

Haha, here we go, sorry, this is kind of crude but here it is

Ok for the sake of easy math, say you have ten classes of ten kids in kindergarten. That's 100 kids. If they only go to school for half the day, you only need five teachers, because the teachers will each have two classes a day (2 classes x10 kids each = 20 kids per teacher x 5 teachers = 100 kids).

Yes when those kids move up to first grade, they will require more teachers anyway, but those teachers are already in place and being paid because first grade is already all day. Then the next group of 100 kindergartners will come to replace the current group.

I'm probably not explaining this well because I'm tired, but my mom is a teacher, so I can tell you she's bitched to me about this a kermillion times.

Of course, down there in LA, they were also teaching us french in second grade. Go figure.

Actually, that would be one thing I would agree with. Foreign languages are most easily assimilated at an early age.

Really, it's best to expose a newborn to as many different sounds and languages as possible. When we're born, we can pick-up on all the different phonemes that can possibly be expressed by human-kind. As we grow-up, our brain learns to filter out, and eventually completely ignore phonemes that are not used often.

It's why there is the stereotype of Japanese people confusing L and R sounds... in Japanese, there is no distinction between these two sounds and it leans more heavily towards the R pronunciation, so when older individuals speak a language with L in it, it slurs as an R.

Conversely, many Asian languages have an NG sound that simply does not exist in most European languages, and we have a horrible time pronouncing it.

If they had taught me German I would have been far happier to learn another language. I just couldn't wrap myself around French. I understand why they chose that language for us (being in Louisiana and it having such a large Fench population, history and such) but still.

Look at it this way. if you take the 10 in the morning and push them all day. in order to keep 10 in a class, you need twice the teachers.

I think here's where the confusion is coming in... Kindle is thinking, "Why is having enough teachers for full time kindergarten viewed as needing more teachers?" The way she sees the problem, kindergarten has been operating with half staff.

The confusion, I think, is that it is not a question of switching back to full time KG. I'm guessing that KG was first introduced to the US following WWII, when while stewarding Germany, US officials saw the benefit of earlier education. KG started as a half-time concept in the US, and in most areas, has always been so. Unlike 1-12, which have in the modern era, always been full time.

This is why adding full time KG teachers would be seen as adding more staff, requiring more money, because we've gone from 0 to 1/2 to 1.

Does that make any sense? (I'm pretty drunk).

Yep, kinda like that smile I guess I just never knew that I was a minority having gone to Kindergarden on a full-time schedule with the other kids in upper grades. To me, the kids going to half day kindergarden, is a crock. I don't plan on having kids but if I did, I'd send them to a private school for them to go for the full day.

It's not that bad of an area. When I lived there after graduating HS I used to get a kick out of all the nudie bars on Bragg Blvd in Fayetteville. BB was full of prostitutes as well.

Since the closing of Ft. Springfield, the city's gambling and prostitution industries have suffered, crippling the local economy.

She was pretty foxy. But I think I sort of creeped her out, because she asked me if I went to the one high school in the county, and I said no, but didn't think to explain that I went to private school because my mom hated the principle.
