The problem with your theory is that David Lynch would never make a movie as poorly written as any of the Star Wars movies (even if I love them).

Yet he made Dune, and thought it was such a piece of shit at the time, that the directing credit went to Alan Smithee

yep, he got fucked there. his hands completely tied. you can't restrain someone like Lynch when he wants to make a film. That's why Elephant Man was so great because Mel Brooks backed him and used his power to scare away anyone who doubted Lynch's vision. He hates Dune to this day. In fact Blue Velvet was a sort of consolation given to him by Dino DiLaurentiis because Lynch was so unhappy.

I thought that was just the crappy extended dance mix for TV..

Also, awesomely proving my point:

David Lynch turned down the chance to direct Star Wars: Episode VI - Return of the Jedi (1983) to direct Dune (1984).

Of the original three, RotJ is definitely my least favorite. But I think Episode IV and V were good and based in good story-telling. The problem came when Lucas started to care more about marketing opportunities than the story, and saw special effects as an end unto themselves, rather than a means through which to tell the story (which is why all three of the new ones sucked donkey balls).

I tried to watch that Phantom Menace garbage when I worked at a video store and I seriously turned it off after 20 minutes. I shouldn't have even given it that long. I never looked back.
