I think that it is a metaphor for the irrational fear that accompanies desire. Furthermore it is contemporarily placed in the context of an action film and in so doing it acknowledges it's own virtuality. Thus it comes full circle to acknowledging that it is a metaphor and comments about the nature of metaphor not just in stories but in human nature itself when faced with the unknown.

You probably have the most accurate interpretation. In that case I'll just take credit for my own.
I read within it that when a subject become virtual then the rules may change. I mean, how do you treat a bear like a woman? That would be just as absurd and a confusing use of metaphors.
