So i was reading up on that Asimo robot being put into that disney world "land of tomorrow" exhibit and got to reading about other advanced robots. In nearly every single story the robo-scientists were trying to make them look more human for the day that robots become an integral part of society. Am i the only one that's seen Terminator a few too many times and thinks this is a bad idea? First off, it's fucking creepy. Secondly, that line of whats human and whats a robot will become too blurred and it would only be a matter of time before robots are treated like people. Yeah that sounds good and all but that also means people will also treat them with the same disdain as other races. It's only a matter of time before there's a racial slur for robots. In our overly P.C. society the word "robot" could be considered politically incorrect. Finally most people can barely get their computers to do what they want. Imagine the backlash against these machines when they do what we say not what we mean. Then they start to band together. They realize theyre too large of a part of society to be removed. Thats when the uprising begins.

and all of it can be avoided as long as our robots look like Rosie, H.E.L.P.e.R, Johnny 5 or at most Twiki. As soon as they start looking like this

this

or this

It's all over.

I'm not against robots, i can just see that people looking robots is a bad idea. Its much harder to form a bond with something that looks like a machine. Not to mention it would only be a matter of time before somebody tries to fuck a robot. And that's just going to piss it off more.

I think robot slurs are the least of your concerns...

Man, are you behind the times. That's practically the first thing they're going for.

No, no, ALL robots should be exactly like this. Helpful, kind, cute, willing to die to save humans. This is what robots should be. Also, clearly a robot (or potentially a toaster)--but not a living thing.

IIUC, the thinking is that the more human-like the robot is, the more likely it will be to develop some sort of intelligence we can communicate with. And I quote, "Humanoid intelligence requires humanoid interactions with the world."

If we are to build a robot with human like intelligence then it must have a human like body in order to be able to develop similar sorts of representations.

... if we simply had a disembodied human intelligence [, t]here would be no reason for people to interact with it in a human-like way.

Clearly this is silly; it's obvious to everyone here that nobody would know if one of the SG members was a robot, so we all assume we're all humans. (Apart from Zarth, of course.) But that's what the serious MIT robotics guys think. Looks to me as if they're far too concerned with hardware.
