Because it is a molecule.

Just wanted to clarify that for someone who insisted otherwise.

Now anyone who reads this post will be properly informed rather than dumbed down a notch from the misinformation previously issued.

However, it IS made up of the chemical compound Hydrogen and Oxygen...

Although, as recently suggested... It's no longer thought to be TWO parts of Hydrogen..

But closer to 1.5.

So more accurately..

WATER is a MOLECULE; NOT a CHEMICAL...

And it's roughly H1.5O rather than H20.

Why did I put this in silliness?

Because I'm sure someone will find something dumb to reply with.

I hate to go all dictionary-police on you, dude, but let's consult the Random House Unabridged for just a second:

mol·e·cule /ˈmɒləˌkyul/ -noun

1. Chemistry, Physics. the smallest physical unit of an element or compound, consisting of one or more like atoms in an element and two or more different atoms in a compound.
2. Chemistry. a quantity of a substance, the weight of which, measured in any chosen unit, is numerically equal to the molecular weight; gram molecule.
3. any very small particle.

See the part where it's filed under chemistry, and not, say, uh, feel-good moleculeology? What do you suppose that tells us?

I understand what you're trying to say -- water is much less bad for us than monosodium glutamate and such -- but even water can be harmful to us in large enough amounts. It's all chemicals and balances. It's... well, it's science! I think even Mr. Wizard could agree.

, HOH) is the most abundant molecule on Earth's surface, composing 70-75% of the Earth's surface as liquid and solid state in addition to being found in the atmosphere as a vapor. It is in dynamic equilibrium between the liquid and vapor states at standard temperature and pressure. At room temperature, it is a nearly colorless, tasteless, and odorless liquid. Many substances dissolve in water and it is commonly referred to as the universal solvent. Because of this, water in nature and in use is rarely clean, and may have some properties different than those in the laboratory. However, there are many compounds that are essentially, if not completely, insoluble in water. Water is the only common, pure substance found naturally in all three states of matter_for other substances, see Chemical properties.

TAKEN FROM: nullwikipedia

HOWEVER...

If you'd like to find out what the chemical composition is OF water...

You can do further research...

As the study of chemistry is chemical composition...

Sad to say... The more you debate about how water is a chemical and not a molecule...

The dumber you look and less I try to increase your knowledge...

Why is everything an argument?

Why do you feel a need to try to prove others wrong when you don't really know what you're talking about?

Oh wait.. Maybe:

Oh, really. Hm. Interesting.

See, a chemical is defined as any substance with a distinct molecular composition that can be used in a chemical process. Does water not have a distinct molecular composition? You said yourself that it does. And I'm pretty sure it's a popular component in many chemical processes occurring in nature.

I have to go to work now, so I'm not going to get to see your response to this for a while, but I just wanted to clarify. shocked

Yeah. Generally anyone who doesn't condescendingly insist on some nonexistent distinction between chemicals and molecules (which is a lot like insisting on a distinction between plants and vegetables), can be safely put into the "non-idiot" pile.

I think all that people were trying to point out is that when you advocate the ban of chemicals, you're being ridiculous, because everything is chemicals. It's not nitpicky or argumentative. There needs to be a distinction to make clear what the fuck it is that you want people to do.

I have an overwhelming urge to argue about the differences between plants and vegetables now.

From ye olde Wikipedia article you linked to:

"Water is the chemical substance with chemical formula H2O: one molecule of water has two hydrogen atoms covalently bonded to a single oxygen atom."

So we've established that water is both less filling and tastes great.
