my 2� -

don't mess with tutorials or manuals, just sit down and start playing. And don't get too hung up on the filters. the bset thing you can do for yourself is learn to color correct. Mess with curves and levels - find a good balance between saturation and contrast -

Next best thing, masks and adjustment layers. Done correctly, you should never need to modify your original image. You can turn layers on and off at will and see what you've done.

that's just a suggestion.

And yeah, I'm jacking around with it now, but there are so many frigging buttons and crap, I have no clue what any of them do.

Messing around with photoshop during work is an awesome time killer as well.

I have a photoshop 6.0 book that I bought from amazon. It's very comprehensive and helpful but I don't use it too often. It's more fun to just fuck around and see what you can do with it. It helps though, to have guide lines, but if you're not just using it your skills will not pay the bills so to speak.
