Okay, the "Horny Teenager Zoophilia" thread got me to thinking...

it seemed that there was an awful lot of "Ewwww" and puke going on but very little justification for those reactions.

I agree it is a stomach turning thing to think of (to most people) but why is that? Saying "Because it's an animal!" just doesn't cut it. There must be more to it than that.

Is it just intrinsically morally wrong?

If you aren't religious then is it okay?

If an animal willingly engages in a sexual act does that make it okay?

Would it be worse with a dog or with a gorilla? Is intelligence a factor? Is it because we believe animals are so lowly that sexual acts with them are beneath us?

I get the whole "Ewwww" thing but that doesn't answer anything. I would really like to hear some thoughtful discussion on this.

Eh, if the animal is willing, I say go for it. I just don't see what is so attractive about a sheep.

Well I think it's "sick" because you just can't get the relationship with an animal that you can with a human. Plus animals are inherently dirty.

There's no such thing as willing. An animal cannot consent. End of discussion.

Okay, now we're talking.

In answer to those two things, people have purely sexual interludes with other people all the time, is that sick? If the animal was "clean" would it then be okay?

(I am not trying to put forward a case that says it is good or right to sleep with animals, but I really want to get to what is at the core of our reactions to this subject. I'm looking for objectivity)

I figure animals are akin to children in their innocence.
They can't give permission for sexual relations because they don't understand what's going on.

But if a dolphin makes the first move, by all means go for it.

Exactly. You can not just assume that the animal knows what is going on and if it is really willing to allow it.

Plus... it's just seems completely against nature.

I think it comes down to informed consent, and I'm not so sure an animal can give that. Sure, they can get aroused, but that's primal and instinctual and doesn't mean anything, really. You're mentally on unequal planes, and it just strikes me that the person is taking advantage of the animal.

It in inherently disgusting only because of the way culture has raised you. That said

Animals don't consent to being eaten either but we breed them and kill them for that purpose all the time.

Isn't a dog humping a person's leg "willing"?

That happened to me once, at a bar in Boise, Idaho.

We ended up going out for about 6 months. But she died in a terrible fishing accident frown

To this day, I still will not eat tuna.

That is really interesting. It seems that way to me too. Yet I can't explain why properly or put it into words.

Anyone want to tackle that one?

I think it is interesting to note that a lot of our reactions are intuitive here.

"It seems..." and "It strikes me..."

I am not saying that I am exempt from this, I just wonder why there is such an instant emotional reaction for something that is actually quite hard to justify.

But isn't the real issue gay animals who want to get married? Also, animals should not be allowed to have sex with each other until they're 18. And could someone please tell them to put some darned clothes on, already?!

well, besides the liger, i don't know of many animals that date outside their species. (sub-species -- yes... species -- no)

Well even if you gave it a bath, didn't care about anything but having sex, and the animal is willing... I don't know, I can't think it out any further.

I disagre with everyone that said they can't consent though, a big dog will rape you if he feels like it, and a lot of them will go along with it either way. They're as mature as they're ever going to get and they understand it as well as they can. It isn't like a teen who consents but doesn't understand his/her actions, because they will when they're older. Plus, what harm is it going to do to the animal?

well, actually there are a bunch of sub-species interbreeding examples (some natural, some done with human intervention)

the liger (tigon) is just one example...

It's wrong because it's in the bible. And our Constitution clearly outlines a separation of church and state, so, obviously, we have to pass laws based on the bible.
