Long wait. I'd hate to be anxious during that time.

I have one every year, even if I'm in a long term relationship. Better safe than sorry.

Just got tested a week ago. Makes me feel good, actually. I don't have any suspicions, but I like to know I'm being smart...for once.

I did it a while ago. And I haven't got laid since then. Which just goes to show that you shouldn't flip the bird at the old gypsy lady you cut off in traffic on your way to the clinic.

I was having some health problems about a year and a half ago, the doctor wanted to do an HIV test. It was scary because I had never been tested and I had recieved blood some years before. I was all paranoid and the doctor took his time getting back to me, but fortunately I was fine... well not fine, but no HIV. Hell, I'd give my right testicle not to have HIV. wink

fear not the HIV testing. it's totally a good thing. i have done it many times, and of course there's always the heart pounding call to get the results, but it's just a few moments of tension that you're trading for so much peace of mind.

Good for you and good luck.

Also, the next time you're going to get it done, look into finding a clinic that administers the newly approved oral swab test. Results for that bad boy take as little as twenty minutes. smile

I've been tested a bunch of times...none in the past year though since I was with my ex so I should probably go again just in case...I used to go every six months just to be safe. In the world we live in, it's just better to know for sure.

Yeah, I always feel like it's a good idea to get tested at least once a year. Which reminds me, it's probably moving on to just about a year since I was tested last. Hmm...

I got the oral swab test the last time I went to Planned Parenthood for it, which was the second to last time I got tested... and they STILL made me wait two weeks, those fuckers. Those two weeks turn me into such a hypochondriac.

Of new infections among men in the United States, CDC estimates that approximately 60 percent of men were infected through homosexual sex, 25 percent through injection drug use, and 15 percent through heterosexual sex. Of newly infected men, approximately 50 percent are black, 30 percent are white, 20 percent are Hispanic, and a small percentage are members of other racial/ethnic groups.(4)

Approximately 40,000 new HIV infections occur each year in the United States, about 70 percent among men and 30 percent among women. Of these newly infected people, half are younger than 25 years of age.(3,4)

Hmmm... apparently, if you are either a hispanic, or white, lesbian who doesn't get into needles, you have virtually nothing to worry about.

essentially black homosexuals are the biggest risk factor. not to sound critical or anything.

See, this is one thing I resented about my ultra-liberal elementary school...
they were as bad as Nazi's, right wing christians, or even sexual deprogrammers in the sense that they fed us these overly broad, onesided arguments without any elaboration. without any room for discussion. without any rationale.
I remember when someone asked about the HIV virus ( remember, we're talking 10 year old kids here) the response from a teacher went along the lines of " No, that is NOT true. AIDS is EVERYWHERE. It doesn't matter who you have sex with, it is rampant, it is highly contagious and EVERYONE is at the SAME HIGH RISK for receiving it. and NO there is NO cure"

Hmmm... sure, its a rampant problem. sure, it effects millions.. but for christsakes... is a bunch of fuzzy, alarmist, not to mention somewhat inaccurate rhetoric REALLY doing anyone a real service?

I get tested 3 times a year, generally.

It is really important for everyone to do, and honestly, it isn't that big of a deal.

I am in Québec currently, and I am not exactly sure how to go about asking for one here though. I -believe- it is done at the CLSCs, but I am not 100% sure the general practice here.

Does anyone have any info?

I've been having protected, monogamous sex. So I decline.

Mostly because it's protected, but the monogamy helps.

Well, I was a bit misleading. The oral swab tests aren't new. But there's a method now that has just been approved that allows for analyzation of the test to be done on-site (and possibly even over the counter) rather than the traditional way of sending your sample off to a lab who has to send it back, etc.
