i don't know about arthritis but cracking any joint is defenitly very bad, joints have fluid in them to lubricate them, when you crack a joint you basically pop the bone in a different position causing the fluid to displace rapidly into the newly formed opening while making the sound.
this puts way more pressure and wear on the joint than normal use so if you frequently crack your joints the long term effect won't be good.
