It shouldn't really been painful, its not intended to be. Its is more about being restricted and at the other persons control. I really enjoy the process of being tied up, especially in the Shibari style as it is much more intricate than the western styles of bondage. Also the japanesse have much more of an emphasis on the rope being used for pleasure, I.e they may brush the rope over the girls nipple before firmly tying the rope around her chest. They also use crouch ropes... (ropes that run between the girls legs) to put pressure on her clit to add even more enjoyment to the experience.
