Chivalry is only good in certain doses. I do believe that you should treat a lady with all your respect, however you don't have to be a 'pussy' about it as someone said. We have at least moved on from being neanderthal dickheads, so it should show. Respect, romance and a good hard fuck should never be completely seperate things!

Why not just be polite to everyone? Why do only ladies deserve your respectful treatment?

Fuck if I know. If I get to a door first and I see someone else coming up behind me, I hold the door for them. Male, female, both, neither, it doesn't really matter.

Exactly, I am british though!

I can count the number of times I haven't opened a door for someone this year on one hand. I am always holding doors open regardless of who is walking though. Sometimes i'll even linger for an abnormally long time just to make sure the person behind me doesn't get the door shut in their face.

I'm respectful to everyone, but in this instance I thought we were talking about the opposite sex. If we're not, then I like to be a gent to everyone I come by, if only to make the world a little bit nicer.

Chivalry doesn't mean doormat. Chivalry, in the end, is the self-imposed commitment to obey certain behaviors regardless of what other people do. It usually pertained to courtly behavior or agreeing not to kill someone you were fighting with in disreputable fashion.

So look at this way: Batman is chivalrous. He doesn't kill, ever, and he saves people irrespective of whether they really deserve to be saved. That doesn't stop him, however, from gaining the upper hand through the most devious and/or ridiculous preparatory measures if you cross him and kicking seven different kinds of shit out of you as a consequence. Because of that, people respect and fear Batman. If everyone is finding your "chivalry" an excuse to run you over, that's usually because it is; if you want it to stop, you start finding ways to coldcock the fuckers until they know their place, but you also show restraint and mercy where appropriate and in greater measure than they showed you.

In short, if chivalry is getting you run over, you're doing it wrong. Man up, learn to punch back and harder, and be the Batman.

Of course, Lancelot also fucked the kings wife, so maybe not the best example of Chivalry.

This is one of the better summings up of the matter that I have ever heard. And an excellently chosen example. smile

The only fault I would find is that chivalry also contains an element of comfort that the Batman usually lacks.

Maybe because we stopped teaching it?

Apart from the obvious ideas I have no clue what is considered chivalrous, and which examples are merely extensions of politeness.

it has to do with the way that parents are raising their children. correction not raising them. daycares don't teach chivalry/manners. you'd be lucky if they teach your kids anything. nine times out of ten they are too busy making sure the little fuckers aren't eating the paste or running around with the non dangerous scissors. when the parents are at home with the kids they plop them down in front of the tv and let them watch crap that really does rot their brain. or let them go hours and hours with a mind numbing reality altering video game. all the while feeding them ungodly amounts of processed foods and high fructose corn syrup. heaven forbid the kid become too active, we'll just pump him full of whatever sort of drug the paid off by the pharmaceutical industry HMO doctor decides to give him.

all in all core values are not taught any more. manners and chivalry are not taught any more. the only education young men get about women comes from internet porn and BET. its all bitches and hoes to them now, not ma'am and ladies.

if i have offended anyone by this i do appologize. it is just my observation as a high school teacher.

Why do people say things like this? How about trying to frame your argument in a way that won't offend people, or barring that, standing behind what you've said because you think you are right, offensive or not?

it is just my observation as a high school teacher.

First and foremost, because the times are changing. Examples:

1) Most dames I meet enjoy walking through puddles, even say it's fun. I also prefer not to have to carry around a wet jacket I paid decent money for (and money doesn't come often for me, so neither would jackets. Puddles are dimes a dozen).

2) In the late 50's, it was discovered that women were also born with arms. Like our arms, they were capable of opening doors and pulling out chairs. They still couldn't take off their own bras, or were at least very selective in relation to when they would do it themselves.

Chivalry isn't dead. It's just reinventing itself, just as the times are.

1. I like you because you called women "dames", and mentioned puddles for some reason.

2. Your second point was the most ridiculous and pointless thing I have ever had the privilege to read. You can't be serious.... right? RIGHT?

Pretty much every guy that I've ever met that THINKS he is chivalrous is really just a huge wussbag.
They all kowtow to try to please the details out of any woman that will give them the time of day, are bitter towards the competition, and generally creep everyone right the fuck out.
If you're one of those "chivalrous" guys, I'm probably one of those "assholes" that you're bitter towards because I've figured out how to get pussy without consulting a 600 yr old manual that never really worked in the first place. I just use my sense of humor, am confident, fun to be around, and yes, I will probably tease and make fun of the girl you want so badly but are too nervous to have a regular conersation with (I know that pisses you off, but I don't care) and honestly, I don't give a shit whether she wants to fuck me or not. If yes, then maybe. Maybe I don't think she's hot enough or interesting enough to put my penis in. If not, big friggin' deal! It ain't like fucking her will start a chain reaction of magical hippie love that spreads throughout the world, ending war, greed, famine, hunger, suffering, and pollution.
Pay attention next time as this asshole holds open a door for her and the elderly couple walking into the restaurant behind us. biggrin
