I just underwent a vasectomy last Thursday, and I noticed that the most recent post in a relevant thread was a year go. So I figured I'd open a new thread in case anyone is considering the procedure and has questions. Or in case anyone really feels like trolling and telling me I'm a selfish bastard who'll regret it. You know, either way.

Basic info: I'm 24, in a long term relationship but not married, and have no children. I had the operation performed in a hospital under general anesthesia.

As I'm still in the process of recovery (sore balls abound! biggrin ), I can give updates as to how it goes.

are there any options to have kids later?
do you get a little jar of sperm frozen?
or can they extract it from your balls?
can you get a little flag put into your penis that says "SPERM!" and shoots out when you cum?

not really very expensive and not very easy reversal.
no jar I have 2 kids already
Not sure about the ball thing...doubt it though
You still Cum there just isn't little swimming sperm in it.

Are condoms not cool anymore? Don't want kids - put condom on - want kids - take condom off. I must be missing something...

Yeah, about 90% of the feeling of having sex.

But seriously (do I even need to answer this comment seriously?? oh well)

-- Condoms are not 100% effective.
-- There is a loss of sensation and a bit of awkwardness.
-- Some people are mature enough to realize that they never want kids, EVER. And do we really need more people on this planet? Are we running low?

spend $ on condoms...loose feeling...bad rubber smell...worrying if something happens to the condom or.......... have a quick simple 30 minute procedure that didn't hurt at all. (at least I didn't feel anything, and only took over the counter asprin for swelling)..... I think I'll take option 2

But by all means if your cool with option 1....enjoy and have at it.

It just seems weird to make a life changing decision that could effect you for the next 50-60 years. It is the elective part of elective surgery that is confusing. More people means more ideas which means more potential in the overall human condition. I get it if you don't want to have any but don't blame it on the planet as a whole.

What made you decide that you wanted one (or more precisely, didn't want kids)?

I decided life is short enough, and there are plenty of other things to do: career, relationships, hobbies, reading, sleep. Kids take up way too much time, and are pretty often annoying. Some people want kids; I'd rather travel the world. And if I ever had a major shift in brain chemistry and for some reason wanted to raise one of the little goblins, I could adopt. (As has been discussed above) there too many people already, and my genes are nothing special.

How exactly are you feeling?

Laying in bed for a week? Jogging and kicking ass like Chuck Norris?

Neither really. Was there ever an episode of "Walker: Texas Ranger" where Walker sat on the couch for a couple of days doped up on Percoset with ice on his balls, then hobbled slowly into work? If so, then I'm just like Chuck Norris.
In more direct answer, I'm feeling fine, it's just my balls that are a bit achey.

How were you able to get the dr's to agree to do that at a young age? Most women who want to get turned away, just curious.....

I just kept on trying. You're right that it's easier for men to get sterilization (still sucks to be a woman whatever ). I only had to go to two different doctors, but then I'm in New York, where it might be easier.

Dose it feel any different to climax?

I don't know yet. No sexual contact is allowed for at least a week after. And no strenuous activity allowed for three weeks. And I like my sex strenuous. However, doctors say there should be no difference.

Reversals are possible, but only about 50% effective, less so the longer you wait to get it done. So in my case, it's not an option. They say you should consider vasectomy permanent. I didn't freeze sperm for the same reason. If you want a back door for later, don't do it. And yes, sperm extraction has recently developed, but it's still extremely unreliable. And yes, the flag gets installed in the fourth week. ARRR!!!

Are condoms not cool anymore? Don't want kids - put condom on - want kids - take condom off. I must be missing something...

I have been using condoms with my girlfriend for the past 5 years, but they're not as reliable as a vasectomy, and I'd rather not have to continue using them my entire life when one quick surgery could solve the problem for good. And at any rate, vegan condoms are pretty damn expensive, though that wouldn't be a problem for most.

More people means more ideas which means more potential in the overall human condition.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Overpopulation#Projections_to_2050
We don't need 11 billion ideas. This argument always crops up in various forms. "What if your child cures cancer?" But it's just as likely that my child will create a new breed of mega-cancer. If you feel guilty for not having children, then you should feel guilty for ALL the children that you're missing out on having by not having sex with every random person you meet. The bottom line is more people = more problems. We have a tough enough time finding the resources for 7 billion.

But anyway, debate is pointless. No one was ever convinced they should have children or a vasectomy by a post on a discussion forum. I merely offer advice for those considering the operation, and experiences for those who want to question an oddball. miao!!

Nope, not at all. I've had mine for over 7 years now, and if anything it's made sex better because I can have sex with no anxiety that I'm going to procreate. Very little of an ejaculate is sperm, so the difference post-snip isn't noticeable.

WyldeSage said:

I got mine, without having children, and the doctor who did it required no prior consultation... ObtaintheWolf and I were very lucky. Most doctors won't perform the surgery, but if you shop around, you'll happen upon doctors who are pro-choice when it comes to controlling ones procreative destiny. It's harder for women... If you're under 35 and don't have at least three kids, you'll catch hell from most doctors, though there are, again, a lucky few. Men have it a little easier because those who change their mind can often have a costly reversal.

It's different for different people... general recommendation is two days on the couch with frozen peas on your junk, and no heavy lifting for a week. I was running errands 6-8 hours after surgery, but nothing strenuous, and I don't recommend doing that.

My brother described it as the worst experience of his life; he said it made him want to throw up. In general, the pain should be no more than a tattoo. What people don't like is the sensation of pulling. Like when going to the dentist, you can't feel pain, but you can still feel the dentist's pick scraping your teeth. Just unpleasant. I highly recommend it.

Luckily for me, my doctor only does vasectomies in the hospital under full anesthetic. This meant it took much longer than it otherwise would have, but the surgery itself was a breeze: like taking a nap in a flowy robe.

Afterwards it's just a dull ache for a number of days. If the pain is anything more than that, then something's wrong and you should go right back to the doctor. And they will always give you painkillers and an athletic supporter to help out your business.

The wikipedia page for vasectomy has a link to this video of a no scalpel vasectomy. It looks incredibly easy peasy. I'm pretty sure this qualifies as a miracle of modern medicine.

i would definitely go in for general anesthetic when i get mine. i'm more than willing to spend to time to avoid the pain. the dull ache i can deal with even if it will be uncomfortable. i havent had any problems with tattoos so it sounds reasonable.
