Why does everyone here think you have to be bony and skinny to be hot? I think fat girls, chubby girls can be just as gorgeous. Most people are so spoonfed from what the media tells them is beauty, even people that consider themselves "alternative", that they just make fun of larger people.

how lame is that?

Let's face it... there is a point where someone's weight begins to affect their health and ability to function as a human being. It is not hot. It's tragic.

That is so obviously NOT the issue here.

I really, really hate you for bringing up this topic again. However, since you are new, here is a link to this exact same thread from a couple weeks ago.

If you want to see where this thread is going and how many people it will piss off, read the:

I'm certainly not disagreeing that fat is unhealthy. Obesity is most definitely an issue - especially in the US... but the direction of the thread was one of society's perception of "overweight" people and what that entailed. Again, inherently a good point but I believe (and correct me if I'm wrong) that the main issue people had was with the tone in which the topic was presented.

I merely meant to suggest that bringing up health derailed previous observations... not that obesity is not generally a problem but that insensitivity perpetuates stereotypes.

I think the issue is either beauty or sexual attraction. To me both of those are linked to health. I do not find unhealthy people who are unable to participate in life to be either.

I don't believe in lieing about it to be PC. That would remove pressure to improve oneself. It takes effort to change and drop 60 (I would know) or so pounds, or even to maintain your physical condition. People who have the drive to put the effort in are hot! A certain girl with 32% body fat still is hot to me because she is able to spar for 2 hours and then skate 16 miles home with me. Why 32% body fat? Quite a mystery to me, but when you look at her move you can feel the energy.

[EDIT] Looking back... well yeah it was a crappy way of putting it. I was reacting to the blanket "fat is hot." Fat doesn't conceal the person that lies beneath, it's sort of a non-issue. I am just leary of being to accepting of the situation. If it's symptomatic of an unhealthy lifestyle then I think there should be pressure to change before something beautiful is lost to the world.[/EDIT]

i wonder if fat people are thought unatractive in our modern health conscious socity because everytime another person with a modicum of understanding concering the way the body works sees a fatty they think:

gee this person might have

diabetes
heart disease
stroke
hypertension
gallbladder disease
osteoarthritis (degeneration of cartilage and bone of joints)
sleep apnea and other breathing problems
some forms of cancer (uterine, breast, colorectal, kidney, and gallbladder)
Obesity is also associated with:
high blood cholesterol
complications of pregnancy
menstrual irregularities
hirsutism (presence of excess body and facial hair)
stress incontinence (urine leakage caused by weak pelvic-floor muscles)
psychological disorders such as depression
increased surgical risk

that or it's the media brainwashing us!

SG is a commercial site. It must please its customers to remain in business. If the demand was there for heavy models, there would be such models on the site.

If I hear the word "fatphobic" one more time....

puke

Speaking in general (not to anyone here in particular)

Everyone's view of their body is different, please don't try to force your viewpoint on anyone else.
Also, if you're the kind of person who looks for problems everywhere, you'll find them. It's a given with that mindset.

The problem, of course, is that there's basically no correlation between being fat and these problems once you control for people's lifestyle, and how people look is, in fact, an exceptionally unreliable idicator of whether they eat well or are in good shape. I've large, yet I work out hard 5/6 times a week, eat well, almost never get sick, have a clean lipids profile, etc., and that's not uncommon. And, of course, it's even more common for thin people to be sedentary and eat poor diets, which is what matters. Moreover, the perpetuation of these crude stereotypes leads to lots of eating disorders that are far worse for one's health than just being overweight. The idea that discrimination against fat people is really for their own good is just egregious bullshit, exactly like people who used to think that women were betraying their nature when they went into the workforce.

Now, personally, if people find thin people more attractive than large people, I don't find that objectionable in the least. No one said attractiveness had to be fairly distributed. But when people try to develop scienitific-souding rationalizations for their prejudices, as if they're the police force for the AMA or something--Christ, give me a break. Do you assume very thin women are anorexic too?
