Have any of you ever taken depo provera (birth control needle)? I just started taking it, and now I'm finding horror stories about hair loss, depression, 7 month periods, weight gain, ect. I'm kind of scared to say the least. Have any of these things happened to you or someone you know?
I would not recommend it to my worst enemy. I gained 20 kgs! I suspected the depo, but wasn't sure until my skinny assed sister went on it and gained 14 kilos in 6 months!! She'd never had a weight problem in her life. She and I went off it when we realised what the cause was and now are both back to our regular weights. We both found it impossible to lose weight while on depo, no matter how much exercise we did.
I also had a myriad of other health problems that all magically went away after I stopped taking it.
Same here, a friend of mine was on it---got pregnant. Neither of them were too happy about it.
Although she was very happy with it otherwise, no other side effects for her.
I had the hair loss. I ended up with big bald spots - 3 of them about the size of a small lime. I also got really bad acne. My skin has always been really clear but the depo shot left me with horrible cystic acne.
The weight gain was a problem for me too, along with depression and overly sensitive boobs - so bad I couldn't wear a bra or have anything touch my boobs
Its not something I would recommend taking - ever!
I've been on it now since '99 and the only side effect for me was the depression which I'm on meds for and slight weight gain. For the longest time I was blaming the depo, but I think it was just me being lazy and drinking a lot of beer.
Also, I was prescribed it not for b.c., but to prevent
My ex wife was on depo for almost a year. Depression, severe mood swings and weight gain almost the entire time. Probably one of if not *the* roughest year of our marriage, and all because of a stupid shot.
i was on it for 4 years and was happy with it until i started having pain during sex.went to the dr and turns out that the hormones in it triggered what was essentially menopause..i was 21.. my vag dried up and lost elasticity, one of my ovaries became enormous and poly-cystic..it was so heavy that it sunk out of place..yuck.i didnt become depressed.but i swear i started to lose my emotions or something.it was nice to be so logical, but it seemed odd to me that i didnt have the crazy lady emotions i was used to back when i actually had a decent amount of estrogen in my body...so i stopped the shot immediately and had to go on hormone replacement for a while to get back to normal. DONT DO IT.
My ex-wife was on it for about eight years, and gained at least ten pounds every year she was on it. As soon as she went off it and back onto the pill, the weight gain stopped.
Unfortunately, she's too lazy to do anything to reverse it. "No, honey, drinking beer and . . . walking to the fridge to get more beer is not a diet/exercise plan."
Sorry, got distracted there for a minute. She has other friends who have been on the shot who have had similar symptoms.
i started depo a couple months ago and am going back for another shot in january. i haven't had any serious side effects so far, just the usual breakout i get from any form of birth control. one of the girls i work with got pregnant when she switched from depo to the pill but really the eventual switch is my only concern.
It's good if you can't remember to take the pill (read: good for teenagers) but bad for most everyone else. I lost a shitload of hair on it (10+ years ago) and it hasn't grown back. Bad zits. Depression.

it's bad. the mood swings/depression can be pretty horrible, and that comes from a lot of women i have known. i've been familiar with almost every other method of female birth control, and i would never recommend that one to anyone.
I had serious mood issues with it, as well as unpleasant physical side effects. It took at least 9 months to get it out of my system. It was just not worth it.
Oh, and on top of everything else named in this thread, it's also linked to bone density loss.
