1. How many people do you think get thier sexual education from watching porn?

2. Is that how you got your sexual education?

3. Do you think porn pushes the threshold of what is normal in a sexual relationship?

4. Do you think this can lead to a healthy evolution in what is a normal sexual relationship?

Solely from porn? Probably more than should.

2. Is that how you got your sexual education?

No. Mine was part of my sixth grade science class.

3. Do you think porn pushes the threshold of what is normal in a sexual relationship?

I don't think it "pushes the threshold of what's normal", but I think it exposes people to things that they might not have thought to try with their partner otherwise.

4. Do you think this can lead to a healthy evolution in what is a normal sexual relationship?

Yes.

The only thing a young man is going to learn from porn...is how to give a girl incredibly lousy head.

FTW

Um, I got my sexual education from reading the 4th grade sex ed book at the bottom of our desks that my teacher, Sister Caridad, never used once the whole school year.

Then, when I was 12, my mom called me up to her room, handed me a book and said "Read chapter 12." (The chapter on menstruation).

Yes, I was raised Catholic.

Probably why I'm naked on the internet now.

1. How many people do you think get thier sexual education from watching porn?
More than probably should, but I wouldn't say it's an astronomical amount.

2. Is that how you got your sexual education?
Nuh. Me & my daddy had a "chat".

3. Do you think porn pushes the threshold of what is normal in a sexual relationship?
Not these days, no.

4. Do you think this can lead to a healthy evolution in what is a normal sexual relationship?
For sure, particularly if your sex life has become stale or repetitive.

I fail to understand how anyone can think sex in porn movies is anything like sex in real life. Anyone who's ever had sex, that is.

Porn techniques are designed to stimulate the viewer, not feel good. Anyone who's ever tried something from a skin flick once probably figured this out pretty quickly.

No shit. Anyone trying to learn about actual sex would be much better off checking out some of the stuff Violet Blue has written rather than watching porn for tips.

1. How many people do you think get thier sexual education from watching porn?

I believe that some people think that porn is a good teacher. So wrong.

2. Is that how you got your sexual education?

No.

3. Do you think porn pushes the threshold of what is normal in a sexual relationship?

No, gaping assholes is all I ever dreamed of.

4. Do you think this can lead to a healthy evolution in what is a normal sexual relationship?

Yes*.

*By yes I mean no.

I've learned some things from porn... lots of comments in this thread about that being wrong, but I've gotten quite a lot of compliments, so I think it depends on what kind of porn you're watching.

I don't think porn educates really, and if you think it's "real sex" you're going to embarass yourself, but when I was 15 or whatever and wanted to know how this worked or that worked it was a lot more helpful than the "OMG NEVER HAVE SEX" classes at my school or the "DUDE YOU PUT THEIR LEGS BEHIND THEIR HEAD AND PUT IT IN THEIR ASS" conversation my idiot friends would throw my way.

So I'll answer my own questions here and give you my take on the topic.

1. I'm frightened of the answer, but if the people who have answered this topic so far count as any sort of a poll, it's less than I think.

2. While officially my sexual education was conducted in 6th grade, and also a video on NOVA my father forced me to watch, and my parents were happy to answer any questions I had. Most of the mechanics of the act I beleive I learned from my Dads hidden stash, and my Moms "erotica'. That is until my first sexual partner, where I began to learn everything for real.

3. Yes. I think what is normal in a sexual relationship has evolved a great deal since, lets say the 50's. I think blow jobs in Jr. High and Anal Sex is on the rise and more acceptable by newer generations than it ever has been in the past.

4. I'm honestly not sure about this question, but I have to admit that the idea truly frightens me. Pornography is starting to disturb me a little, gagging and puking for oral, seem to becoming mainstream.
I have nightmares of teenage boys trying some of this stuff out on inexperienced younger girls. The whole industry just seem mysogonistic and irresponsible.

E.g., has anyone ever seen a porn flick where the woman didn't reach orgasm in the allotted 3 minutes?

1. I am an idealist and a hoper, therefore... I say none.

2. No. A mixture of childish giggling in the playground and year six sex education is where I got my facts.

3. Depends if you're talking about porn where a couple have sex, or porn where there is rape, violence, and murder. There is normal sex in porn, and extreme sex in porn. And of course what is normal in a sexual relationship depends on the people involved.

4. Some porn can be good for a relationship, depending on the people involved.

Unknown, but I'd imagine Playboy has contributed mightily to male's basic knowledge of the geography to be traversed. By the same token, it may also be the reason why men have such difficulty finding the clitoris, but that's speculation.

quasievil said:

Not really; I was National Geographic kid myself. It also helped, and hurt, a great deal to grow up on the farm; I first watched childbirth, for instance at around five years old with a baby horse. Clipper I believe was the foal's name. So I knew the basic mechanics from a fairly young age without the help of porn, but by the same token, I was fairly ignorant of anything something with four hoofs can't do, which is a lot.

quasievil
3. Do you think porn pushes the threshold of what is normal in a sexual relationship?

It's contributed, but I don't think its causal in and of itself. The popularity of Deep Throat in the 70's certainly helped mainstream fellatio as a common practice, but I don't think it brought it about. I think WWII and Vietnam, with GI's intereactions with European and Asian women had more causal impact. The more gonzo stuff that goes on today, I think, and sincerely hope, has little or no causal impact on what people actually do.

quasievil
4. Do you think this can lead to a healthy evolution in what is a normal sexual relationship?

Well, I think it already has, as the above reference to Deep Throat indicates. I think it's probably also made more permissable healthy experimentation and variation from the standard-model man-on-top missionary position that really served neither women nor men's interest. But of course, we also need to worry about whether or not it makes certain, definately less healthy experimentation standard. I would certainly not want most of what goes on in the gonzo stuff put out today to become acceptable at all. Degrading women should never be the purpose of sexual activity.

It's pretty typical of current generations to believe that previous generations did not have sex the way they have sex. But usually this is bullshit. It's probably just squeamishness when thinking about our parents and grandparents having anything other than procreative sex.

I think the only real difference is that people talk more openly about sex now, and admit to doing things that were previously considered taboo.

But teenage girls have been giving blowjobs for many generations now. And in various cultures and historical epochs, anal sex has been a way for women to have sex without "technically" losing their virginity and the social status that has gone along with being a "technical" virgin.

Anyone who has done the slightest amount of reading in the history of sex and sexuality can find out this stuff. Much of the data from the early 20th C is a matter of public record, e.g. the Kinsey reports.

Yeah, and some men's ignorance regarding the many and varied shapes that labia come in.

1. How many people do you think get thier sexual education from watching porn?

Wow - I really don't think that many. I think that sexual education is something you have to get from first hand experience. And serious - how accurate is most of the porn out there. Although, I will admit to watching Seymour Butt's How-to-Squirt video...still didn't work frown

2. Is that how you got your sexual education?

No...I fumbled my way through it all on my own.

3. Do you think porn pushes the threshold of what is normal in a sexual relationship?

Depends on the relationship. Depends on your definition of "normal"...but overall, I think yes...porn is just "too much" compared to normal every-day sex.

4. Do you think this can lead to a healthy evolution in what is a normal sexual relationship?

Once again, I hate the word "normal". I think that as the public demands new porn-styles (think about it - anal porn is MUCH more prominent than it used to be, because people got interested in it) the same people will begin trying it in real life. As long as you are doing what makes you and your partner feel good, does it matter what is "normal"?
