California girls really seem to dig the stache. Though I think Oubliette might win in terms of complete moustache fervency.

Trying to convince the boy to grow one, but he's all "wahhhhh it's so itchy while it's growing in"
HMF! whatever
Is there a way to get through that stage with less discomfort? Boys?

Read this to your boy:

Yes, but it begins with the initial clean shave so it might be too late. A lot of the time the itching is caused because a guy uses an electric shaver to start off clean shaven or even a dodgy razor. This can cause the ends of the hair to break apart into weird crystal looking structures (seen under an electron microscope it looks like it'd be painful to be stabbed with) which during the growing process rub against the skin causing severe itchiness.

It can also be caused by bad shaving foam or cream but that's unlikely if the itchiness continues past the first few days of growth.

One final explanation I've heard is that it can be caused by excessive heat and sweat causing the skins natural oils to build up weirdly at the base of the hair which is an irritant.

So basically, when starting with the initial clean shave use a shaving soap or cream not the stuff in a can and get a really nice badger brush to work the soap into a good lather before applying, then use either a really good new razor blade (a DE razor is preferred but even a mach 3 will get the job done nicely) also remember that during a wet shave the key word is wet, do not be afraid to stop and reapply more soap. Try not to shave areas that don't have soap on them, this will irritate the skin, and also if using the DE razor for the first time, read a quick guide on their use or you might damage yourself quite badly.

To cure the final cause, well, I guess the only thing I can think of would be to wash your face regularly and don't use soap on your face (regular soap is a very different thing from shaving soap and it will dry out your skin causing even worse irritation than the oils at the base of the hairs). Also, maybe try using a nice exfoliant if that's not too girly for you.

/end

I've had a beard for a few years now and I always keep it trimmed and tidy (well usually) and I occasionally grow a mo to go with it. The above methods have worked wonders for me and I've never had issues with itchiness or irritated skin

P.S. I am so glad I got to share some of my shaving tips yay team smile

This pic is badly lit, and from a totally awful angle, but I grew out my 'stache this winter. It started out as a beard I was too lazy to take care of, and become a mustache that was a joke - but it's kinda stuck around and I think I dig it now. (Also: run-on sentence for the win!)
