kinda tangental question, but howlong/visible/noticeable is that removal thread? can you see it or feel around for it yourself (or a partner)? i'm assuming not, but couldn't find any info on that .

Ok, so I have been taking the Pill for about a week now, and I was told that it takes 3 months before you are "fully-covered"...any truth to that, or is it effective immediately?

No that's not right, it should be seven days before you're 'safe'. It takes three months about for your body to get used to the pill, I've had sickness, mood swings and all those lovely side effects but I'm on my third month and they've pretty much gone by now.

Check though, on the leaflet that comes with your pill, 'cause different kinds are bound to be different.

xx

Different types of oral contraceptives work in different ways. But I don't know of any pill that would take longer than a 28 day cycle to be effective.

I've got an implant in my arm, called an Implenon. It's effective as contraceptive for three years, and I've had no problems with it. Totally awesome.

What the fuck, people. This took me less than 5 minutes of searching on the intertubx:

Condoms:

Effectiveness

Of 100 women whose partners use condoms, about 15 will become pregnant during the first year of typical use.* Only two women will become pregnant with perfect use.** More protection against pregnancy is possible if condoms are used with a spermicide foam, cream, jelly, suppository, or film.

*Typical use refers to failure rates when use is not consistent or always correct.
**Perfect use refers to failure rates for those whose use is consistent and always correct.

Pill:

The pill is one of the most effective reversible methods of birth control. Of 100 women who use the pill, only eight will become pregnant during the first year of typical use.* Fewer than one will become pregnant with perfect use.** Maybe slightly less effective for overweight women.

Certain medicines and supplements may make the pill less effective. These include

* the antibiotic rifampin. Other antibiotics do not make the pill less effective.
* certain anti-fungals that are taken orally for yeast infections
* certain anti-HIV protease inhibitors
* certain anti-seizure medications
* St. John's Wort

Talk to your clinician about the medicines you already take before you get a prescription for any prescription method of birth control.

Vomiting and diarrhea may also keep the pill from working. Ask your clinician for advice. Until you are sure, use an additional method of birth control.

It is very important to remember that the pill does not protect against sexually transmitted infections. Use a latex or female condom along with the pill to reduce the risk of infection.

* Typical use refers to failure rates for use that is not consistent or always correct.
** Perfect use refers to failure rates for use that is consistent and always correct.

In short, the pill (if you don't like calling it that, go in your time machine to 1962 and tell people to quit calling it that) is more effective than condoms in preventing pregnancy.

Thank you Planned Parenthood.

Yeah, but you have to consider that those condom statistics are slanted. The statistic where 15 women get pregnant out of 100 is "typical" use, where they don't even use them all the time. If you use them right and every time, they will provide better protection against pregnancy AND vd.

The pregnancy rate for "perfect use" with the pill is still half the pregnancy rate for "perfect use" of condoms.

Yeah, obviously, I should probably read closer. Still though, I'd say for promiscuous encounters, new relationships and even relationships that are newly serious, that extra one percent is probably well worth the trade-off for the protection from vd.

In my opinion, it's never "silly" to continue using condoms. If it will help ease your mind about getting her pregnant, go ahead and keep using them. Yeah, those cost money, and it's one extra thing to do beforehand and clean up afterwards...but the more comfortable you are, the more fun you can have.

I have been on the pill since I was 16. (I'm about to be 24). The majority of the time, my partners have used condoms...I have had 2 long-term boyfriends that did not...I was with them a total of 4.5 years. So, I guess the pill alone seems to be working pretty well for me. I am also anal about it. I take it at 10pm EVERY night, I carry an extra pack in my purse just in case I'm not going to be at my house at 10pm or if we go away for the weekend I won't forget it, and if I miss one, the BF is wearing a condom.

It's all personal choice, I guess.

I discovered one myself without knowing it was there. It was surprising to say the least. I guess it is maybe 1/4" out of the cervix and I guess it felt kinda like fishing line. Being paranoid, of course I assumed it was a needle and she was trying to kill me. You should have seen the way my face looked; so confusing at the time. I was then introduced to the IUD - and all was well. Best thing in the world, in this guy's opinion anyway.

She told me the doctor stated nobody should notice it, and I will say that it took a while before I felt it. It can definitely happen though, depending on position.

I got pregnant on the pill. And I wasn't taking anti-biotics or anything that lowers it's effectiveness. I recommend condems in addition to the pill, (or sterilization if you dont ever want children- hey, the world's over populated already).

if you don't want to get pregnant, you can never be too careful. a woman I used to work with was on the pill and always made her bf wear a condom, and she got pregnant. now I can't know exactly how perfect there both were with using either one, but from what I know of her she would have been very careful.
I know of other people who have gotten pregnant on the pill. it's not very likely, but it can still happen.

and another thing, just because a method works for one person doesn't mean it will work for everybody. that may seem like an obvious statement, but if you haven't gotten pregnant yet using whatever method you use, it might not be because of the method you used, it might also just have a lot to do with luck. and I am in no way directing this at anybody in this thread. I mainly have to tell this to stupid people who think "pulling out" is an effective method of birth control just because it has worked for them so far. I want to smack people like that.
