Download "You Should Have Slain Me" From Hammers of Misfortune's first album, The Bastard, a 3-Act Metal Saga about an unwitting bastard sent to kill a half man/half owl tyrant!
there's a band here in the bay area called Relic http://www.relicscastle.com/relic_site/relic.html
that plays in full armor. they're pretty amazing, but like others i'm not sure if they strictly fit into the genre we'e talking about. they call themselves "medieval rock".

"epic" is a term used too loosely these days
"Power Metal" is more commonly known, and to me, most of it is redundant cheese.
The term "Epic" I often think when referring to songs 10 or more minutes in length..espeically Progressive Rock pieces like Classical numbers.

achilles, agony and ecstacy in 8 parts by manowar is 28 minutes long and is the most epic thing i have ever heard. dantes inferno by iced earth is a really good epicly long song too.
Awesome, a metal thread! A lot of the bands mentioned would definitely fall under the sub-genre of power metal, which I am definitely a hardcore fan of. I don't collect much but I have a good several thousand dollars worth of original power metal CDs. Stratovarius easily tops the charts followed by other awesome bands such as Gamma Ray, Black Majesty, Stride, Angra, Edguy, Avantasia, Iced Earth, Hammerfall, Adagio, At Vance, Dark Moor, Demons & Wizards, Dark Moor, Dream Evil, Galloglass, Kamelot, Nocturnal Rites, Orion Riders, Pyramaze, Pagans Mind, Sonata Arcitca, Dragonforce, and Thy Majesty. And these are just some of my favorite bands. Power Metal for life!
Admittedly I don't know a hell of a lot about metal, raised on a diet of The Clash and The Buzzcocks, but I'm very into Mastodon and Napalm Death. If anyone else has any other suggestions for a girl wanting to dip her toes into the genre, I'd be appreciative.
I'm generally into clean or sludgey vocals, but I'm willing to give anything a listen. Escept Mesuggah.... Ugh.
