people here seem to like all music except for epic and folk metal which are the best, what's up with that?

I think a question more of us are asking is what is epic and folk metal? Never heard those terms before myself.

Iced earth is cool, but prefer the older stuff. I don't know what Jon Schaffer is tring to do with his new music but I'm not liking it at all. Horror Show was not a good album so I didn't even want to check out The Glorious Burden.
The funniest part is in an interview he said Burnt Offerings was the worst album they ever did....its my favorite,Go figure. whatever

Yeah I am feeling you on burnt offerings. It was so raw and intense. But I loved "something wicked" a lot. "Horror show" was okay. It had some memorable songs but not as strong as the other too (I know I am forgetting dark saga but the quality of that is a given. I also won't give my opinion or self titled and "night of the storm rider" because Adam the vocalist ruined self titled and the other guy that they had for NOTSR was even worse so I don't really consider them a band until Matthew Barlow joined) I know I am going to catch hell for this by saying I think the guy that came from Judas priest doesn't work well with iced earth. "Glorious burden" bar the second Gettysburg disc was un listenable. Jon Schaffer isn't to blame (well except with me it clashes pretty hard with my politics) his riffs were just a great if not better then ever on GB. It’s that striker or what ever he calls himself he just doesn’t fit with that hard constant force of iced earth.

well, I just grabbed a copy of "Kings of Metal" last week... granted, that was more so I could blast the title track and teach my kids how to fist-pump and headbang, but still... wink

I love Manowar, and I really enjoy Blind Guardian as well.

I've never heard the terms 'epic metal' or 'folk metal' before, either.

Personally, I'd put those four bands you listed as 'epic metal' under the power metal category. It's a better fit, because there's a way more epic kind of metal out there - viking metal!

SPOILERS! (Click to view)

You want epic?

This is fuckin' epic!

However, I agree that there's not much folk metal being represented on SG.

well I haven't heard Within Temptation, but if you're mentioning them in the same sentence as Nightwish I probably don't want to...

in my opinion, the category Nightwish falls under is CRAP puke

Blind Guardian don't do much for me... but then I do like stuff like Iced Earth, Skyclad, some Fates Warning, Death S.S. etc... I guess I'm just picky when it comes to power/folk/epic/whatever metal...

We talked about this earlier, I like a few bands in the kind of folk or pagan metal genre like Falkenbach and stuff like Summoning, mostly bands which branch more into black metal though. I dont really like much power metal these days, I find it too much technique over substance and sounding much the same but some of the really old songs can be cool.
