Anyone else like this guy? If you don't know who I'm talking about (and most of you won't), download either "Cupid" or "Don't Know Much About History"- or just go rent the movie "Animal House". I just wanted to see if anyone liked this guy's voice as much as I did.

sweet lord, Mister Satan, You just struck a heavenly note! I have two Sam box sets, and two single CD's, My fav' is his live CD (that they ripped off for the opening of Ali last year) recorded in 1963 in the Harlem Club in Florida. It's astoundingly awesome how he gets down and works the crowd into a froth! Fucking a! Sam, R.I.P.! biggrin

DigDug and Dilaudid, you're both right. Maybe one of us should start an "Oldies" thread...

I love Sam Cooke. My father once saw him live. Sam Cooke, 20 feet away, singing live. How cool is that?

there is a song called "change is gonna come" that sam cookes does (as does otis redding) and it's one of the best, saddest songs that there is. though i usually like otis better, sam's version is better of this song. try to find it, it's perfect.

Jackie Wilson singing "Danny Boy" in a slightly souful tone...with HIS falsetto, ohmigawd, I smile as the tears roll down My face at the end on that fugging song. love

I like the hits, the songs I've heard. I like Rose Melberg's cover of "Cupid", too. I don't like Buffett's cover of "Saturday Night"...the vocal is just too...un-Sam.

I don't wanna make anybody mad here, but...Steve Perry manners himself after Sam Cooke. Whether or not you think Journey sucks, be my guest, I'm just saying the guy models his singing after Sam.

Interestingly, Steve's one of the only people I can think of who's quit the music biz cuz his voice can't take touring anymore. Bob Dylan's still going, and his new stuff is critically acclaimed, but...um...I think his voice sounds hella-rough now...like, too rough...
