At 8:36am PDT today, in response to a story about the high price of concert tickets, Suicide Girls member Idjiit of Holly Springs, NC answered the question of how to deal with greedy scalpers with this post:

It really isn't that difficult. Make everything will call. You show your ID and CC card the day of the event to get let in... Why do we need tickets at all in this day and age?

Well Idjiit, Axl Rose must peruse the SG boards, because the man is putting your idea into action:

US rockers Guns N' Roses are set to break new ground by performing the world's first ticketless gig, at London's Hammersmith Apollo on June 7.

Fans will be able to take advantage of new technology which allows them to purchase tickets via their mobile phones, and receive text message barcodes which are scanned on entry to the gig.

The new ticket-selling technology goes live tomorrow morning (May 19) at 9am (GMT).

OK, it could just be serendipitous timing, but nice work Idjiit.

Technology is the devil and all, but that's kinda sweet.

But... paper tickets are so convenient. They must be, why else would they hit you with a $9.50 convenience charge?

Also, Virtuous.com has been ticketing will-call only shows for years, but this cell phone barcode system should really help eliminate scalping.

Too bad about the loss of souvenir ticket stubs...

i've saved stubs from every single concert that i've attended. it would be pretty sad to no longer be able to do that.

See, for most shows I find it doesn't really matter. Like, shows at the smaller venues, who cares, because no one's really scalping tickets unless it's a REALLY hot ticket that had unexpected sales (like when the Weakerthans sold out the Grog Shop here), but even then, it's usually not scalping, just people unloading extra tickets.

It's only for really hot tickets that I think you'd need that.

smart promoters/bands/etc would think far enough ahead to have some sort of ticket either available w/entry...or maybe for an additional cost at the t-shirt/programme stands. probably the latter, when there's a little more money to be made, it'll happen.

i'd doubt that. most people I think just throw away ticket stubs anyway. I keep mine personally.

OK...off subject...but what is this neurotic hatred of cell phones?? And don't start with the "I can never be alone" crap. I mean, they DO have off buttons.

I have a job where part of the job description is "24 hour availability" and yet my cell phone has "mysteriously" not worked on several occasions when I was at an event (translate: didn't want to be bugged) and I have never even been reprimanded.

On the other hand, it has saved my ass a number of times as well.

I mean, fuck...I also train horses as a hobby, but I'm sure as shit not going to trade my car in for one. C'Mon people, 21st century already...

well, I have a cellphone, but I can't be certain that the thing even handles texting. I don't like using it, and it's almost never turned on. I don't like the idea of cell-phone specific services coming out. My life, as of now, is convenienced by a cellphone, but I really don't want to be dependant on one.
