I'm lost
September 2002

JAN 14, 2003 10:27 PM

I recently read an article (I think it was that Distillers article that just came out in AP) that mentions that there are currently no really good female roll models (or maybe it was representatives) in music these days....or more specifically, on the radio.

Of course there are plenty of women represented. Yes, we have Dirrty Cristina, and the staple (temple?) of Madonna, hmmm, Britney Spears, Gwen Stefani...., but who are the roll models? (This is not to say that no one on these boards feels that these women are roll models. This is not to say that I don't. I've loved Madonna since I was in grade school...)

So...who are your female rock n roll models? Why? Who are you excited about?

Just curious? That article got me thinking...(no need to be female to respond.)

I have to say that although i am not female I would say that Pink is a good role model, she has done it her way from the last record on, sure her first record was more catered towards the teen market but she bounced back and stood up for herself and delivered a fine record and continues to inspire.

I think there are probably as many good female role model/representatives in "music today" as there are male, not very many.

Liz Phair, Sarah McLachlan, Ani DiFranco, Tori Amos, Bjork. Role (roll? rol?) Models? I don't really know, but they are all female artists whose music and message I respect a lot... does that count?

That would be Beth Gibbons. She is TRANSCENDENT! Her new album with Rustin Man, called "Out of Season" is quite good. Not up to Portishead standards but still worth a listen.

I can't believe no one has mentioned Exene!!! The whole SG aesthetic would not even exist without her. At least half the girls on this site owe their personal style to Exene (whether they realize it or not).

Exene's real name is Christine. She simply replaced the "Christ" with "Ex" (think Christmas shortened to Xmas). You pronounce it just like it's spelled..."Ex-een" (For you trivia buffs.)

Tegan & Sara... 'cause they create their own music and don't take any shit from anyone wink
Ani Difranco 'cause her words just ring through me every time I hear a song. She's just so honest.

I actually only recently (as in, the last two years) began to listen to female vocalists and musicians.
One afternoon I took a look at my CD collection and realized that about 95% of it were white males, and that hit me pretty hard.

Tanya Donelly from The Throwing Muses, Breeders, Belly and now a solo artist.

Killer voice, and real, actual talent as a guitar player and a songwriter. She's forgone trying to make millions in the music industry in place of making her own music on her terms. She won critical acclaim in the Muses, had her 15 minutes with Belly and now lies in virtual obscurity save for a loyal fan base...and her artistic credentials have never been compromised.

You know I could have listed tonnes of women in music. But I thought the question was who was a role model for you, not who's a woman, who's in music + who you like confused
