although you may listen to thousands of different bands/artists from hundreds of different styles.. are there some that you just have an overwhelming amount of respect for?

i have a few..

boy sets fire... this band fucking amazes me. their live show blows me away everytime. their energy is out of this world. their lyrics are so meaningful and powerful. i love everything about this band. love

tori amos.... love *sigh* this woman. she has had a piece of my heart since i was 14 years old. some of her lyrics are so meaningful and i love her writing style. she has this way of writing abstractly that you can put your own meaning to songs and relate so closely to it. she is very talented, her voice is amazing and just as an extra bonus she is one of the most beautiful people i have ever layed eyes on.

so... who are yours?

Stereolab - They are simply amazing.

His Name is Alive - I always wonder what Mr. Defever will do on his next album, since he's wandered all over the musical map and made some damn fine records.

I respect Aretha Franklin!
Okay, someone had to say it.
How about some old blues guys who've been doing their thing for like 60 years and haven't changed for anything.
Cedell Davis lost most of the use of his right hand to polio, and had to learn to play the guitar left handed. He uses a butterknife to play slide guitar.
How cool is that?

In no particular order -

David Bowie - The man has survived the biz for decades by re-inventing himself 1,000 times
Miles Davis - Remaining true to his art
Prince - Keepin it real
Radiohead - Refusing to be boxed in and continuing to make great music
James Brown (and the JB's) - Inventing the groove that we all shake our asses to
Frank Zappa - For being the freak that he was

This band used to be a million times better, their older stuff was so good, and live they used to be better. Nate(singer) shouldn't scream. He has a great voice, not a good screaming voice.
bands I respect-
Fugazi
Against Me!
Sick of it All
Good Clean Fun(even though broken up)

Dream Theater - More technical talent than pretty much anyone out there... that happens when you meet at berkley school of music

The Who - just wow

Fishbone - Amazing talent, insane live show, wow.

Buddy Rich - the best drummer in the world, always with the best big band

Aretha Fanklin - "the voice of god, if you want to know, is aretha franklin"

Frank Sinatra - you didnt just inderstand the story he was tellin', you felt it.

Christian Lindberg - the first full time pro touring trombone soloist. only person i've ever heard play flight of the bumblebee on trombone.

Miles Davis - How many genres did he start?

George Clinton - the funkiest man alive, with the funkiest band.

THERGOTHON-for only making one album and one demo, and then splitting up...they left at the top of their game, and influenced so many doom metal bands-and i have yet to hear another band make music more bleak and nihilistic than them...

Avail - always an amazing live show, everything they have recorded is good
Thursday - nice bunch of guys, great live show, tons of energy
Rancid - say what you will, but when every other punk band was jumping ship for major labels they stayed right where they were.

I'm sure there are more, maybe later

Aimee Mann and Loreena McKennitt:

Both amazing and DIY....Loreena from the beginning and Aimee bought back her stuff from the majors and sells and distributes it herself.

(OK, they're not bands, but any solo women in music who can do this is way OK in my book.)
