Morrissey is the fourth or fifth celebrity in the last few weeks who has come out bitching about the seal hunt. Don't get me wrong, I'm not supporting beating baby animals, but I'm sick of seeing celebrities trotting themselves out like the government fucking owes them.

This is how I feel when any celebrity takes a stand on anything. Or, as The Onion so astutely noted, three years ago Sheryl Crow Unsuccessful; War On Iraq Begins

How could anyone hate Canada even if seal hunts arn't the most humane activity around.

Gee... I guess I missed all of the "Join the Seal Clubbers Club" posters the government has been putting up. whatever

Why should everyone but celebrities be able to take a stand on issues?

It isn't the stance itself that annoys me. It's the sanctimonious attitude that usually follows it that gets on my tits.

They make nice coats, their good eating. Now I know I'm going to get freaked at and I'm stirring a hornets nest here. But the seal hunt has supported my extended family (not mine granted, I'm a Commercial diver, Dads an engineer, Moms a nurse). BUT both Grandfathers operated seal hunts, the money was very important to seasonal fisherman as it still is to members of my extended family today.

My Uncles shoot their seals, they are legally within there right to club, but it is not done. The seals hunted by my family are not the baby white coats, they are adults. The money that is generated by the hunt is what gets your fishing boat back in the water in the spring. Or what gets you through a winter in a more isolated region where there is little winter employment.

This is a sustainable resource it can support many people. The numbers of seals are very high and they are getting smaller, fighting for food that is not there. Weight and size of seals is on the drop and numbers on the rise. You do the math.

I won't say I'm in favor of clubbing. I'm not, I don't see a need for it. Shoot and make your life easy. But it has been deemed if done properly, a safe, humane and fast way of killing the seal by many organizations. But my personal thought is there is no need of it.

I like steak I like seal, to eat either you have to kill it. To make my shoes we kill cows. Its a good thing greenpeace doesn't make any money off the slaughter of cows or we'd be hearing the same thing. Seals are cute, cows chew cud and pigs roll in crap. Green peace makes loot off the seal hunt.

God didn't anyone else find Paul's wife a pain in the ass on CNN? I'd prefer to be clubbed in the skull then have to listen to her shrill crap voice and her spoon fed facts, lack of geographical, cultural and ecological knowledge. In a world so upside down and backwards there are definitely more important points to be made and torches to be carried. Human rights violations, illegal occupations of countries, a Genocide in Sudan/ Dafur. I think a priority change is necessary. GENOCIDE and in the news I hear more about the seal hunt. Seals with clubs or humans with machetes? Whats more important to you?

Morrisey? WHO CARES? He's a musician who took a stand on a crap cause. Next time pick something that matters, better your fellow man. Bono's annoying in my eyes too but at least he's fighting for some real causes. And maybe he might make a small difference.

You dont need to use game for food and clothing..? Some societies still might however seeing as you live in America Im guessing you may just have some food and clothing shops near you. Which makes your hunting mindless killing in my books. kiss

what about all the Canadian Morrissey fans who share his indignation and want a stop to the seal hunt? they don't get to see their hero just because the powers that be are morally questionable? oh, well, that's entirely fair, isn't it...

the man is one of the greatest lyricists of our time but he's also a myopic prick.

Maybe Morriesy should look at a map and realise how big this country is. I'm about as far away as one can possibly be from the seal hunt and to lump me into the same group of people as the hunters is pretty absurd. The new Federal Government here is dedicated to letting each region run it's own affairs so expecting them to ban the hunt is wishful thinking.
This protest would be far more effective if it was centered on where the hunt takes place.

He wrote a whole SONG about how much he hates America ("America is Not the World" for those of you keeping score at home), but he still plays here all the time. Hell, he just played an hour away from my home IN TEXAS like last month.

Yeah, he lives here, too, doesn't he?

I once had a seal look at me like it was gonna kill me. I could tell it wanted to, badly. They are cute on TV, but have a nasty temper. They say seals never forget. Or forgive.

Seriously, Morrisey -- even the seals are laughing at you!

This season's me-too-ism is a bit much. Did you see that Paul McCartney refused to tour in China after seeing a video of some people in China killing either dogs or cats (I forget which) for either food or fur (I forget which).

I always find this a particularly choice little tidbit. People get their panties in a bunch about Chinese mistreatment of cute little doggies, but are completely, obliviously unfazed by their massive mistreatment of people.

America has hordes of people whose job it is to exterminate our insect and rat brethren.

Why is it the animal rights folks only seem to care about the cute and fluffy animals?

What is with famous people and the seal hunt this year? Is it the pet issue for the next fifteen minutes?

Wait a goddamn second, Freakpirate. YOU Canucks are the bad guys for once here, and I want to enjoy it before you fuckers go and burn down the White House again.

We really ought to ban your PMs from visiting the place over that one.

That's ridiculous. Are lobsters cute? Are trout? Are cows? I think some rats are cute. The difference is, rats and bugs intrude on our lives and spread disease.

And even if the animal rights people did only care about cute animals (which is actually only true about people not interested in animal rights), what you seem to be saying in your post is "instead of only caring about cute animals, you should not care about any of them," which I think you will have some trouble finding support for. Or are you just trying to point out a non-existent hypocrasy instead of actually saying something about the issue at hand?

No no, the difference is that the first three on that list are delicious. Won't someone please think of the non-tasty animals?! frown
