Metal Machine Music is an incredible and important record. Hard to listen to, but it shows Q is irrelevant and obvious and ignorant. When was the last time anyone looked at Q?

I wonder how many people who claim this really do listen to it on a regular basis.

Lou Reed has admitted it's crap, a huge "fuck you" meant to burn off the last committment of his contract at the time. I know defending it and talking about how genius it is is supposed to be a sign of how hip a music fan you are, but sometimes you just have to say, "Yep, it's shit."

He's actually gone back and forth on it; in the "Lou Reed: Rock & Roll Heart" special he said he WAS serious about it but also said he was on drugs at the time.
In any case, his reply on said subject (like most everything else) most likely depends on his whim (or whatever bests suits him) at the time of his answer.

Lou Reed on drugs??? Say it ain't so!

It's just that when Lester Bangs went on and on about how great MMM is, that was funny, as was the whole running drama he had about how much he alternately loved and hated Lou Reed.

However, only Lester Bangs could do that.

I love Lester Bangs. love

Oh. My. God. That 911 Is A Joke is the worst thing ever. How am I going to defend Duran Duran ever again, knowing they've produced that?

Trans is way underrated. From what I understand, Young was partly inspired by Devo (I think they both worked on the soundtrack to some movie--seperately) and the machines that his family used to communicate with one of his sons.

He was later sued by David Geffen for not making a Neil Young record. Despite the fact that he was Neil Young.

Well I prefer my robotorawk to come only from the vocoder lips of Tommy Shaw ala

I agree to a point that maybe its a bit overlooked-but no one is going to convince me that that album is not in the same class as lou Reed's above mentioned fiasco-by the way the album he was sued over was this:

He was sued over that album, but it was really the combination of both records that inspired the lawsuit -- two discs in a row uncharacteristic of his earlier work. I'm not sure how anyone could claim someone who'd already released such a varying range of music had a particular sound, though...

I recorded an episode of ALTV (Weird Al's periodic video show on MTV back in the day) in 1986, I believe, and one of the videos Al played was "Wonderin'" by Neil Young & the Shocking Pink. Amazingly funny video...

It's never occured to me to ever try to defend them.

Hoever, I really want to hear the album.

Kinda like when I had to listen to William Shatner's 60's album and Pat Boone's metal album.

In the biography "Shakey," as well as other sources, Neil has explained Trans - to recap -= he had taken some time off from touring to devote his life to his 2nd sonwho is plagued with numerous neurological and muscular disorderswhich leave him quadriplegic and Neil helped design a special wheelchair and that Transformer Man is really about him and he never had told anyone at the time because he didn't want his kid in the limelight and hedidn'tdo the album to sell it, but as therapy for him as wellas his boy.

Buy the book - it 'splains it so much better than me - and it's, to use one of Neil's words, "Innaresting."
