British entertainment magazine Q released its list of the top ten worst albums of all time, and Duran Duran’s 1995 cover disc, Thank You, received dubious first-place honors. Apparently, Simon Le Bon’s mangled “911 is a Joke” missed its mark.

Deputy editor of Q, Gareth Grundy, said: "The list is a mixture of the unspeakable and those ridiculous acts of hubris, although we tried not to pick on the obvious soft targets.

"Duran Duran was the one that united everyone in agreement. We put it on in the office to remind ourselves how bad it was. Sometimes these things are redeemed by some sort of kitsch or novelty value, but it didn't even have that.

"It's not funny for even a split second and not even the sort of thing that you would put on for a laugh if you were drunk.

"It is abysmal on every level, as befits an album where you have Simon Le Bon trying to cover Public Enemy."

Thank You also features renditions of the Lou Reed classic “Perfect Day,” Bob Dylan’s “Lay Lady Lay,” and “Crystal Ship” by the Doors.

The Spice Girls’ solo projects all shared second place, while Urban Renewal, a hip-hop tribute to Phil Collins (featuring Ol Dirty Bastard covering “Sussudio”), swept third.

The worst 10 albums of all time, according to Q magazine are:

1. Duran Duran - Thank You
2. Spice Girls - Any of their solo albums
3. Various Artists - Urban Renewal
4. Lou Reed - Metal Machine Music
5. Billy Idol - Cyberpunk
6. Naomi Campbell - Baby Woman
7. Kevin Rowland - My Beauty
8. Mick Jagger - Primitive Cool
9. Westlife - Allow Us to Be Frank
10. Tin Machine - Tin Machine II

I love the Duran Duran "911 is a Joke" cover. One of the greatest "No one at any point ever sat you guys down and told you not to do this? Really??" moments in rock history.

I still say the all time worst Lou Reed album is better than the greatest Nickelback album.

Lou Reed has said Duran Durans version of Perfect Day was the best cover of any of his songs ever done. The fact that they put a lou reed disc down as one of the worst of all time shows they are idiots. They just wanted some press.

Metal Machine Music is an incredible and important record. Hard to listen to, but it shows Q is irrelevant and obvious and ignorant. When was the last time anyone looked at Q?

I wonder how many people who claim this really do listen to it on a regular basis.

Lou Reed has admitted it's crap, a huge "fuck you" meant to burn off the last committment of his contract at the time. I know defending it and talking about how genius it is is supposed to be a sign of how hip a music fan you are, but sometimes you just have to say, "Yep, it's shit."

I have listened to it, and it is shit. It is important though, if only for the bands that would use it (and Reed's attitude) as a starting point.

But no, I wouldn't listen to it again.

He's actually gone back and forth on it; in the "Lou Reed: Rock & Roll Heart" special he said he WAS serious about it but also said he was on drugs at the time.
In any case, his reply on said subject (like most everything else) most likely depends on his whim (or whatever bests suits him) at the time of his answer.

It's just that when Lester Bangs went on and on about how great MMM is, that was funny, as was the whole running drama he had about how much he alternately loved and hated Lou Reed.

However, only Lester Bangs could do that.

Saying that something is "great" or "important" isn't the same thing as saying it's one of your favorites.

I've listened to Metal Machine Music three times, and have no idea when I'll get around to it again. But it doesn't really matter whether the effort stemmed from hubris, retribution, laziness, or a joke -- any one of those choices (or combination thereof) equals comedy gold.

Oh lord, I love you PointBlank. I've never been able to find any of the songs off Thank You. Both file sharing and actual shops turned up nothing. But now I can experience the beauty of Simon and John and Nick at their lowest. (I think they were the surviving members then, although John may have left).

I love Phil Collins and I love Ol' Dirty Bastard, but that tribute is an abomination. Lord.

Aw sad! Tin Machine II wasnt that bad, I like maybe 4 songs on it.
But I own Never Let Me Down and Tonight, so maybe my opinion is skewed to say the least.

note: I dont think Never Let Me Down is good at all, and Tonight has 2 good songs on it, albeit faaaaar from Bowie's best.
