i was deeply saddened by joe's passing. he was not only an icon of rock (and punk in particular); but also a genuinely warm and compassionate man. i met him when i was still working at epitaph/hellcat records. we threw a bbq for him and whenever anyone of us that joe hadn't met yet walked up to the table where he sat, he would immediately get up and actually INTRODUCE HIMSELF and ask things about you. imagine that. you're next to someone you greatly admire, you don't know what to say, you're staring at the ground, and he just starts asking things about you!
anyway i got an e-mail from the label manager at hellcat records about the family's request that people donate to future forests, an organization that joe helped start, rather than sending flowers or anything to them. so i thought i'd pass along the link to that website in case any of you are interested. r.i.p. joe strummer.
