My friend has just told me that Alice In Chains have reformed and are to play download this year??
Now "grunge" was and still is the love of my musical life but is there really any point in all these different bands reforming when their lead singers are dead??
It's not as if layne staley was easily replaceable!!
It all seems wrong to me, but maybe I'm just old fashioned??

no, reforming a band like alice in chains without layne just feels completely wrong, but there seems to be a trend of late eighties and early to mid-nineties bands reforming - even without the members that made them so bloody awesome in the first place. it's shite, but what can you do?

As much as I want to say that Jerry, Mike and Sean are selling out, I'm not gonna miss the opportunity to see the songs I grew up with being performed by 75 % of the band.

The Download website hasnt confirmed anything, but check out this news story:

I take it Jerry's just going to do all the singing? That's pretty weak.

Apparently they're geting someone else to do the singing, tho its a possibility. He plays alot of the alice stuff he wrote without Layne when he's been touring so who knows.

I just hope they don't do another Alice album - that would suck balls

Wow what a bad idea. That said if they come to NY I'd probably buy a ticket.

It would be kind of cool if like Jerry Cantrell did a couple Alice In Chains songs at his solo shows if the mood was right, but touring under the name Alice In Chains without Layne is just wrong.

Now that I think about it, when Layne was alive they never really played shows and backed out of Lollapolloza in its heyday (probably because of Layne's drugs).

I'll never undestand that "let's-replace-the-dead-guy" mentality. It almost never works (some notable exceptions being AC/DC, and/or groups like New Order who don't bother to replace their fallen comrades). The Doors tried it, and were completely panned for it. Nothing says desperate for money like reforming when a key member croaks. Granted, Jerry did write a lot of the songs, but that voice is too distinctive, too much a part of the band's identity to be replaced easily. Cantrell should stick to doing Alice songs in his solo shows and not go through the embarasssment of getting the gang back together and looking like total wankers.*

*I know, I know: American people who say wankers are wankers by default. Fuck it: I just love saying that word too much to care.
