I'm lost
January 2006

I did a search for this and although there are a few topics on bands/groups from Jother countries none of them really fit the bill for what I was looking for.

I'm looking for good groups. Off the wall stuff. Rap, punk, rock/rap, and just nice easy listening stuff. From anywhere but... here. Well it could be from here (the US) too but I'm looking for things in other languages. French, German, Russian, Japanese, etc.

I tried looking on iTunes Music Store under World but that got me no where at all. So if you know anything in other languages just list the type of music and band name. Awesome.

Here's the World Music group on SG.
I love World Music but none of the groups I like fit into any of those categories, so I don't think I'd be much help...

i know of quite a few bands from other countries, but if you're looking for stuff in which the vocals are in other languages, i can't be much help. there's sigur ros and mong hang, both of which are from other countries and sing in other languages (just so happens the languages are made up, though).

I have one of those... "Do you know that band that plays that one song with that guy?" Questions. Hopefully I can be a bit more help.

A week ago iTunes 'Just For You! (Beta)' said I might like this certain Folk group. I remember it being in that genre because I thought 'folk? huh, ok, I'll see.' And it was great! I just can't remember who it was... They had only one album on iTunes, the art work had a lot of green in it... It sounded... hmmm Scotish, there were bagpipes and it was pretty upbeat. Amost like bagpipe eletronica. Any idea who that was?

This is not necessarily true of Sigur Ros. Takk I think was completely in Icelandic, and easily the majority of Agaetis Byrjun was Icelandic. () was the only one that was completely in a made-up language.

The language the Sigur Ros dude was singing in is an invented language of theirs called Hopelandic. smile

So you're looking for Western pop music in other languages influenced by other cultures? Or are you looking for more purely foreign stuff? I.e. are you more looking for African rap or indigenous African music?

I don't like "comic book" either, so I call 'em the talkie picture books.

As far as foreign pop, I'd recommend:

Serge Gainsbourg (especially Histoire de Melody Nelson) - France
Fela Kuti - Africa
Harry Belafonte - Jamaica
Les Nubians - Afro-French
Buena Vista Social Club - Cuba
The Dubliners, Great Big Sea, The Pogues - Ireland
Wyclef Jean's Haitian album

I get my weekly dose of world music from Charlie Gillett's world music show on the BBC World Service. You can listen online here: Charlie Gillett

I'm currently really into a two piece from Portugal called Dead Combo, as well as Brazilian Psychedelic masters Os Mutantes.

A long term love of mine are an African group called Tinariwen, who are an african blues group - i've seen hem live a couple of times and they're great, well worth a listen. Their first album The Radio Tisdas Sessions is absolutely brilliant if you want some off the wall, un-western blues.
