If you think the Grammy's are and empty symbol.. which they are.. then... W-h-o cares who Gets one! and more to the point why have sour grapes over not getting an empty symbol? Curious. One need not put up with anything that does not actually carry any relevance to that person.

Sir Weasel has every right to say what he says and turn a phrase however he sees fit. The real question is..Why bother? Do you buy records based on who wins a Grammy? Really? Does anyone? Would that sway anyone you know?

And let us remember that an "award" for the best kind of ART is ridiculous even if you agree with who won. Oscars, Emmys, Tonys, Golden Globes... they are all based on a false pretense that one persons tears or laughter or perspective or expression of hope or angst or hate can somehow be valued higher than another's. Wishing that the people you like would get them is a silly as hating the people you don't who do.

You know what the real grammy winners are? When you turn to a friend with a CD in your hand and tell them you love it and they should give it a listen.

That's a real grammy. That's all that ever matters.

actually I was just having this conversation with a friend of mine earlier today, and I would agree with you except for the fact that after every "awards ceremony" sales for the winners go up.

The convo with my friend originated when I was telling her about some music she should check out and she said she was just now getting to the point where she could listen to non-mainstream stuff. It's not because she didn't like it, but due to her busy lifestyle she doesn't have the time to read an indie mag or hang out with friends who might be able to tell her about music, movies, etc. she may otherwise never get the chance to hear about. It's people like her who depend on the grammy's and MTV to tell them what they should check out first and what's good.

This is why I feel I have a right to be upset that certain groups of people get overlooked. So to that degree I have to agree that this is something up with which we should not have to put.

I agree with mr. Weasel to a certain extent, yes rock stars have big egos, yes their album probably wasn't as good as some that were brought out that year and weren't as well publicised, but that's still a matter of opinion. (cringes, I hate that argument)
Plus, slagging rock stars for being in a band and saying it's "nothing more than a convoluted way to stroke your own ego" is pretty rich coming from him, what with him being in a band and all.

And the headline just reminds me of season 3 of Black Books. Bernard, upon being made a hasty breakfast by Manny:

"Up with this I will not put!"

I sort of suspect Ben gets the irony.

You might want to read page one of the thread, if you haven't already.

It sorta makes me sad that no one has heard of Screeching Weasel. Cool Kids is one of my favorite songs.

That is a great song. And I am a bit surprised, I figured more people would know Screeching Weasel here.

Also, the first thing I thought of when I read the thread title was the movie "She-Devil" when the maid quits: "Up with this bullshit I will not put!"

For a punk duder, Ben made his point pretty well. Usualy it's just a sneer and a 'fuck off!' a la Johnny Rotten.

and even if you don't know who he is, which i didn't, this is the internet, look him up before you go all ad hominem ignorantum on his ass, claiming that what he says isn't important because you haven't heard of him.

I'm assuming that you're directing this at me. My comment had less to do...in fact it had almost nothing to do with not knowing who Ben Weasel is (apologies to all the Screaching Weasel fans out there) but had everything to do with the fact that he was making such an obvious fucking point.

I think that the Grammys are the likes of stuff up with which we should not have to put.

I think.

The only thing more pathetic than the Grammys is actually caring about how pathetic the Grammys are - followed closely by Ben Weasel pontificating about how pathetic the Grammys are. I anxiously await Howie Mandell's lecture on the lameness of the Oscars.

Right, I understand that. But why the Churchill-grammar reference? Why not just "Stop This Dumb Shit"? I JUST DON'T GET IT!

I was losing a bit of faith in ol' Ben after that piece he wrote on going to the All American Rejects show (I believe that was the band, anyhow), but he has proved he's still the same lovable old bastard he always was. I think anyone putting his credibility into question at this point just hates him "cuz he don't have to work".
