"Rock musicians really are a pathetic lot," says Ben Weasel, commenting on the Grammys, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, etc.:

Playing in a band is itself nothing more than a convoluted way to stroke your own ego. How much is enough? What does it take for a multi-millionaire rock star to say to himself, gee, maybe it's a bit silly for me to accept the award for the best album of the year considering that I'm the beneficiary of a rigged system that isn't even vaguely interested in the existence of the hundreds and hundreds of amazing albums that were released in the same year just because they committed the sin of existing outside the magic circle of the Big 4?

Think about the unmitigated hubris it takes to stand up on national television and shake your own hand for ostensibly having made a better record than everybody else that year (according to the people who need to sell the idea that your record is brilliant in order to make more money). Now consider that most of the great records released that year never got a chance to be heard solely because the people who made them weren't as good at being businessmen as the guys mugging for the cameras at the podium. Doesn't it kind of make you want to puke?

I second that emotion, if emotion is the word I want...

Not that I disagree with him but who the hell is Ben Weasel and why should I give a fuck about what Captain Obvious has to say? "Rock stars have big egos!" Holy shit! Stop the presses.

If rocks stars have big egos, then bloggers must compare their egos to rock stars'

Well, I guess it's worth noting that Ben Weasel was kinda sorta a band guy himself, and his comments are in the light of the Sex Pistols snub of the Hall of Fame.

EDIT: Ben, not Bern.

If Ben Weasel has a big ego, I want to see it and possibly touch it, but certainly photograph it, and then take it home and touch that.

I'll accept the award for it, too, and I'll take it home with me and I'll touch it.

Screeching Weasel was a pretty good band. What is truly brilliant is the bastardizing of the English language for the sake of this thread! Fucking awesome

and even if you don't know who he is, which i didn't, this is the internet, look him up before you go all ad hominem ignorantum on his ass, claiming that what he says isn't important because you haven't heard of him.

And his main point, that even just accepting recognition from a corrupt industry means that you aren't deserving of recognition, is one that i agree with.

On the subject of ending sentences with prepositions, people often recount a story involving Winston Churchill. When an editor dared to change a sentence of Churchill's that appeared to end inappropriately with a preposition, Churchill responded by writing to the editor, "This is the kind of impertinence up with which I shall not put." His purpose, of course, was to illustrate the awkwardness that can result from rigid adherence to the notion that prepositions at the end of sentences are always incorrect.

Right, I know the reference, but I don't understand it's relevance to the story.

I was always told to never end a sentence with a preposition. That's why it's funny to see someone exaggerate that rule---it's difficult to never end a sentence with one---esp. if you want to sound like a person living in this millenium.

Who wrote that fucking headline? Yoda?

I don't mind ending a sentence with a preposition. Occasionally it's appropriate. I wasn't familiar with the Churchill reference. whatever

His blog is among my favorites of the musician authored variety.

I'm also glad that the Sex Pistols told the hall of fame to fuck off. After a career at least partly centered around being intentionally abrassive and agitating, it would have been rather pathetic to see them show up and play along.

... especially since that's precisely the criticism that Ben Weasel was making.
