Atleast the Sex Pistols are holding their ground about it. Black Sabbath said the same thing every year they got snuffed -- and suddenly had change of feelings towards the Rock N' Roll Hall of fame when they finally got in.
bingo...
apparently nobody remembers the big fuss that was made when they got snuffed the year they became eligible. At least they are sticking to their guns.
it's like any other Hall of Fame, people.
you only get so many votes, and there are "great" bands that don't get in on thier first nomination every year. especially the first year they are eligible.
that's life.
don't for a second that Jonny Rotton all of the sudden grew some principles... he's being an asshole to be an asshole, trying to get some publicity. if they got it, only the people that cared would even notice. this way EVERYONE will hear about it.
25 years must have elapsed from the time an acts first record was released. That only guarantees eligibility to be nominated, not an actual nomination. In fact, none of the acts who became eligible this year, by virtue of releasing their first records in 1980, were nominated.
I'm really tired of debunking the "Sex Pistols were a manufactured boy band" bullshit every time it comes up, but will say that any quotes from John Lydon which seem to support that accusation are so suspect as to be meaningless, given his propensity toward self-contradictory bullshit (if it sounds good) and his disdain for [former Sex Pistols manager] Malcolm McClaren.
Likewise, the words of McClaren himself, one of the greatest con-men and self-promoters in rock history... so if your source of information is McClaren (i.e. the film The Great Rock & Roll Swindle), find a new source.
But I'm not likely to argue much about it with anyone who thinks that Elvis Costello, Patti Smith, and the Ramones were playing in "packed houses" in the United States in late 1976 and 1977... small houses "packed" with dozens of people maybe...
Funny thing is The Sex Pistoles were nothing more then manufactored Punk Rock and they did pretty well considering the fact. Johnny Rotten was always a prick but I heard he does it all for show and to be "Punk". Sad fact I can't believe they would induct the band when they could not play for shit.
I love the fact that someone said they were sell outs. Fuck yeah they were, but at least they had the bollocks to say that they were in it for the money. When I was living on the street or couch surfing, if some guy had come to me and said "Play in this band and make millions of dollars", well, I'd be a sell out too.
Yeah calling them sell outs is kind of dumb but people didn't seem to care. They ate it up like it was really good punk music. That is the only problem I have with the band was they were not that great music wise but some how were smart when it came to business. They knew exactly what the people wanted and gave it to them.
