being a sound engineer (not a DJ) who routinely gets challenged with not "offending" a conservative audience with music (curiously, that never includes my musical sensibilities) i have had to stock up on all sorts of music that i've heard in passing and wouldn't normally collect.

here's a few ideas:

faux jazz standards recorded this century: michael buble, rod stewart, madeleine peyroux

female vocalists that people consider jazzy but isn't: norah jones, diana krall

female vocalist that is recording jazz from this century: patricia barber

modern jazz that doesn't make my teeth itch: joshua redman, charlie haden, christian mcbride

classic jazz: duke ellington, miles davis (stick to "kind of blue"), oscar peterson, ballads of john coltrane

70s classic rock, disco, motown, and funk: rolling stones, aerosmith, aretha franklin, 4 tops, temptations, marvin gaye, otis redding, james brown (selectively, maybe not "sex machine"), martha reeves, diana ross, smokey robinson, wilson pickett, earth wind and fire, stevie wonder (nothing in the last 20 years), elvis

modern "rock"/pop that may make your teeth itch: sheryl crow, dave matthews, john mayer, sarah harmer, jonatha brooke, kelly clarkson (eiw), shawn colvin, lyle lovett, josh rouse, sting, joss stone, rachel yamagata, better than ezra, format, goo goo dolls (from 1997 on, not the "don't beat my ass with a baseball bat" era), INXS, chris isaak, lifehouse, shawn mullins, sister hazel, sundays, vertical horizon

and if you have to play christian rock or pop, three bands that start with "s" that may be somewhat bearable: switchfoot, sleeping at last, sixpence none the richer

good luck!
