Check out Stephin Merrit's other bands, too.

the 6ths are great. Different vocalist for every song.

They're one of those bands I forget I like, and then a song comes up on shuffle and I remember.

Future Bible Heroes were always a favourite of mine.

Also, watch Pieces of April. There's a lot of his music in that movie.

i bought 69 Love Songs about a year ago. it took a few listens but really grew on me. lyrically, i find Stephin Merritt to be brilliant. i'd like to hear the 6ths, Future Bible Heroes and the Gothic Archies but i haven't yet.

I think I like them best when Stephin isn't singing, but really, what an amazing songwriter.

just wait til you 'em live. live is incredible. usually entirely acoustic.

the first time I ever performed live solo I covered when you're old and lonely

I like the sixths a lot but FBH and GA just never grabbed me.

As someone who actually listens to lyrics, Stephin Merritt is like a gift from heaven.

I'm assuming you're referring to i, but I'm not sure. I don't tend to keep up with future releases, so I'm not sure if you mean some album that's not out yet but got leaked or something like that.

Whatever. I'm just going with i. It's very good. It's not 69 Love Songs, particularly because the theme "songs that start with the letter 'I'" isn't as compelling a theme as love songs. But a really nice thing if you are me is that this one seems to have been done with all or mostly live instruments. The main thing that bothered me about Magnetic Fields before had been that I just don't like electronic music all that much - but the lyrics and arrangements and whatnot were all outstanding, so I learned to live with it. Here, the arrangements are very recognizably Stephin Merritt, but with beautiful cellos and whatnot. I very much prefer that aspect of it. Unless you were really attached to the electronic elements, I can't imagine disliking it.
