Which is the worst song that the Bealtes did OR
Which is the best cover version of a Beatles song done by someone else?

by comparsion to so much of the shite being peddled out now i don't consider anything The Beatles produced to be bad, though i do have something of a long-standing grudge with Let It Be. Paul, generally, was the one letting the standards slip at the end.

the best Beatles cover ever, obviously, is Joe Cocker's version of With A Little Help From My Friends, which is infinitely better than the original.

The worst song they did was probably "Maxwell's Silver Hammer", but even as a die hard Beatle fan there are quite a few of their songs I can't stand -- "Revolution No. 9", "Wild Honey Pie" and "Honey Pie", the White Album ("shoo-bee-doo-wop") version of "Revolution", any of George's pseudo-Indian drivel ("Within You Without You", etc)...

I guess the trend there being the most extreme of their respective idiosyncracies..

And no one has ever done a good Beatle cover, ever. Contradiction in terms.

Obladi Oblada

And there were quiet a few good soul covers. Ike and Tina Turner's version of "Come Together" comes to mind. Oh, and Soundgarden's cover of that song wasn't half bad either.

"Wild Honey Pie," easily for worst Beatles song. Best cover, i gotta go with Cocker's "With a Little Help From My Friends," not only because i like it but because of my blind devotion to the Wonder Years.

Within You and Without You is awful and, for that reason, I can't fathom it when a person says that the best Beatle album is Sgt. Pepper. That track completely kills the momentum of the album.

I thought that Fiona Apple did a great cover of "Across the Universe." It was on the "Pleasantville" movie soundtrack.

How can you hate "Maxwell's Silver Hammer"? Ringo plays an anvil, for cryin' out loud! I get a kick out of that song.

As far as my least favorite, I always skip "Within You Without You", it just doesn't really go anywhere. And lyrically I really dislike "Run For Your Life".

For best cover I would pick Bonnie Pink's version of "Blackbird", if for no other reason than her pronunciation is perfect, and I get really tired of hearing Japanese singers attempt to sing in English and being completely incomprehensible.

It was certainly competent but, in my opinion, covers aren't great if they're merely note-for-note karaoke replicas.

I guess the obvious picks for worst song are Revolution #9 and Wild Honey Pie, but to pick an actual "song" I'll go with Everybody's Got Something to Hide Except for Me and My Monkey. The white album has some good track but it is just really uneven... I don't understand people who say that is their favorite Beatles album.

I like some of the George Indian stuff (I like WiYWoY) but I dislike the Inner Light.

Best cover... Yes did a good cover of Every Little Thing. IMHO it keeps the spirit of the original but reinterpret's the song in Yes' own style.

For a good Beatles cover album you should check out Yellow Matter Custard. It's from a one-off live performance a bunch of prog musicians did. Mostly very faithful versions of original Beatles songs, and they are all good. The tracklisting is unexpected and good too (lesser known songs like "I Call Your Name" are on it).

I never really like Beatle covers, expect that soundtrack from I Am Sam. But I think the worst Beatle track was probably Mr. Moonlight. It was a cover that they did, and it never worked for me.

That's Ono's influence. I agree, it's rather too avante garde for it's own good.

One of the few songs that is almost universally praised as such. Cocker fucking nailed it.

Funny. I always list that among the worst covers I've ever heard.

But, you know... different strokes.

I second this. (The U2 cover of Helter Skelter makes me want to pour drano down Bono's throat.)

The Breeders' version of Happiness is a Warm Gun is pretty fuckin' good.

Yeah, I was going to say. There's such a disconnect between the song's lyrics and the music there that I can't really imagine what the hell they were thinking. It was like they were trying to make the song's idealism something dark, but couldn't.

Also, Yellow Submarine is good, goofy fun. Like Octopus's Garden.
