I found this amazing website of mothers who protest music called Mothers Against Noise.

Their definition of noise:

Noise is music that uses unpleasant or painful or extremely loud or discordant sound. Noise is also a very dangerous musical trend that is hell bent on destroying civilized culture, this anti-cultural movement is quickly sweeping the globe, and is very dangerous to our youth.

They list Sonic Youth and Wolf Eyes at the top of their biggest offenders list, and feel that Radiohead is a "gateway" band":

a lot of people keep asking why i included them into this list, but they are what i consider a 'gateway band', my son was started out by listening to Radiohead. By presenting a plastic commercialized pop product this act has effortlessly slipped under the radar of a lot of watchdog groups. They use alot electronic noise and noise imagery within compositions and it may on the surface seem harmless but once our kids get hooked on dissonance they will only go further down the road for a bigger kick. If your child only has pop records and a Radiohead record, it might not be too late to save them.... please remove Radiohead CDs from their music collection.

Finally i conclude with the list of what is wrong with NOISE according to them:

Plainly put: Noise music causes ear and brain damage!!

Apparently they don't see a problem with run-on sentences, however.

I love people like this. The world would be far less interesting without these nutjobs.

I'm pretty sure this is a joke site.

As someone said on the messageboard, watchdog groups like this, usually are heavily moderated and do not allow open debate on their forums.

JUST IN CASE though;
Does anyone feel like bombarding them with information on noise bands? If it is real, I feel as though they're very ill informed.

My favorite thing though is her stance on noise promoting Rebellion. Considering she lives in the united states, which, if not for a large scale rebellion, would not exist.

I dunno they do have the tendency to ruin good songs by wandering off on a noise fest for 10 minutes at the end eg. Mote

I wonder if this lot have thought that there parents felt the same way about the crap they grew up listening to and there grand parents thought the same about what there parents listened to. For fucks sake in the 1920's Jazz, swing and all that was considered devil worshiping and culture destroying. and i will guarantee that in 10 to 20 years time people will have the same thoughts that this lot have with the youth of the day and what they are listening too.

There's always been a cultural bias against dissonance in music. Hell, the premiere of the Rite of Spring was damn near a riot, as much for the "ugliness" of the music as the sexual themes on display in the accompanying dance.

This might just be the greatest music related news ever posted on SG. I'm still laughing, and I had to forward the link to a friend who plays power drill, circle saw and keyboards in a local noise outfit.

When i saw the topic on the forum, I immediately thought this was about some boring regulations concerning loud concerts or whatnot, but I thought it'd be funny as hell if some parents were protesting against Melt Banana or Merzbow. And behold!

/me goes to put some Melt Banana on the turntable.
