What songs are you always pointing out to people are covers that they think are originals?

Tops of my list:

Respect by Aretha Franklin (Otis Redding)
All Along the Watchtower by Jimi Hendrix (Bob Dylan)
Istanbul by They Might Be Giants (The Four Lads)
Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood by The Animals (Nina Simone)
Half of The Byrds' greatest hits (Bob Dylan, Pete Seeger)
Whole Lotta Love by Led Zeppelin (Muddy Waters)

Seriously. The Sun is a Mass of Incandescent Gas is also a cover. Originally by educational kids music duo Tom Glazer and Dottie Evans.

And so is New York City. It's by NYC indie pop trio Cub.

I'll be damned. I always assumed it was a Bobby Fuller original.

Do you count songs that were written by someone other than the performer, but not performed by the writer?

Related question, did Otis Redding ever perform Respect? I want to hear this.

I don't think that counts as a "cover." Like Diane Warren writes some shit song for Aerosmith, they play it. It's not a cover.

People don't know that Van Halen didn't write "You Really Got Me"?

If people think that the original (or most notable) performer wrote it, I'll count it. Like, for example, most people don't know that Mack the Knife was written by Bertolt Brecht and Kurt Weill for their Threepenny Opera.

So was Alabama Song. Not written by the Doors.

Though I'm sure no one thinks that Ella Fitzgerald wrote Summertime or The Lady is a Tramp.
