My appreciation of Xmas music first began when the place I worked at a few years ago tried to force us to listen to ONE Xmas CD over and over and over and over from the day after Thanksgiving till New Years Eve. And it wasn't even a good one. It had Mariah Carey and Boyz II Men and shit like that on there. After a week or so of that torture, I decided to make my own Xmas mixes of music I could at least tolerate and beg them to let me play them. In the process, I discovered that there really is some good stuff out there, and I've been making Xmas mixes every year since.

So right now I'm gathering my raw materials for this year's mixes so I can give them out at Thanksgiving. Personally, I'm more of a traditionalist. I don't want to hear so much of whatever indie-rock act is popular now doing some ironic Xmas song, though I do enjoy some of that kind of stuff. I'd rather hear Xmas music from Bing Crosby, Brenda Lee, Chet Atkins, boys choirs, Phil Spector, Rosemary Clooney... stuff like that. It makes me feel like I'm in a holiday movie.

So what, if any, Xmas music do you enjoy?

Christmas in Hollis--Run DMC

I dig the Vince Guaraldi Charlie Brown Christmas, too. I'm not sure if that's because of the music or the nostalgia.

Frank Sinatra, Bing Crosby, Mannheim Steamroller, Kenny Rogers..Disneys Music Collection..That kind of stuff. That's off the top of my head since our music collection is at home and I'm not there to look.

Neil Diamond. You can appreciate him earnestly or ironically. I listen to the Neil Diamond Christmas album all year round.

Aah, a classic! smile I like Harry Connick Jr. myself and my favorite x-mas album....Christmas in South Park. You've never heard a christmas song til you've heard mr. Garrison singing "Merry fucking x-mas."

Gosh I love holiday spirit!

Also, "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas" is awesome, I especially like the Chrissy Hynde version.

But for my money, Mavis Staples owns the best Christmas song crown with the theme from Christmas Vacation.

I believe Los Straightjackets have a Christmas album. I'm not sure if you feel that falls into the whole trendy indie Xmas rock bin, but if you like surf music at all it would be worth looking into.

The Vandals' "Oi! To The World"

Dean Martin's "I've Got My Love To Keep Me Warm"

And, especially, all the really "medieval" sounding ones--like, "God Rest Ye, Merry Gentlemen" and "Greensleeves".

seconds on U2 - Christmas Baby (Please Come Home), and John Denver & the Muppets.

The first christmas album I listen to every year, though, is Ray Conniff and the Ray Conniff Singers - We Wish You A Merry Christmas. And it goes on directly after Thanksgiving dinner. It's a family tradition.

more recently, I got into Trans-Siberian Orchestra's Christmas albums, and Gary Hoey's instrumental electric guitar collection.

The Trans-Siberian Orchestra is good, "A Christmas Wish". I also love the L.A. Confidential Soundtrack. It's not all Christmas perse, but it has a very sparkly wintery feel. Elvis "Blue Christmas", Art Mooney "Nuthin' for Christmas", "All I Want for Christmas is My Two Front Teeth", "The First Noel" and any and all traditional Christmas carols but my all time favorite is "We Three Kings". So pretty. love
