one of my favorite local bands(the conformists) is playing a show in december. i emailed them asking to see if it would be okay with them to record the show and they said they would be fine with it. the thing is, i have never recorded a concert live before and would like any kind of tips/advice from people who have more experiance with this. i have a tascam analog 4 track that i am planning to use. as of now, i am debating between recording straight from the sound board (note: there might not even be a sound board, it's a small venue) or setting up a mic. i have a regular and condensor mic. all in all, i want to get good sound quality but still retain the raw, live sound.
If at all possible, get into the club and do some test recordings for mic placement - maybe offer a band another night a free recording. Talk to the sound guy at the club before - don't come in on the day of the show and say "Hey, I'm here to record" If you luck out and get a cool person they can and will be very helpful.
If it turns out that you can use the soundboard, consider renting a DAT recorder.
