I've said it before and I'll say it again ...

Everytime a band gets sober, an angel loses its wings.

If you're eating a bowl of soup wait until later to check out the extra creative guy.

why is there ALWAYS some uptight ninny that has to come spoil the fun? is the chorus saying "drugs in the sky"?

Nothing's shocking... whatever

I personally want him to be more specific about exactly which drugs he's advocating.

I think he should make a Baz Lurhmann type song about it, yknow like
"Do one thing everyday that scares you (like, for instance, mainlining liquid ketamine!) Try crack once, but stop before it makes you hard. Try heroin once, but stop before it makes you soft. Don't mess too much with your hair while on speed, because if you make it to 40, it will look 85. Get plenty of calcium (ie; live off milk and cocaine for a few years, like Bowie did in the mid-70's!). Be kind to your veins, you'll miss THEM when they're gone. DANCE..."

HAH! There's more good, creative music being made now than ever. You just gotta look for it because no one's shoving it under your nose.

You can read the whole article/interview (it's from the September 2005 issue of Spin) HERE if you want to put those quotes of his into a little bit of context.

The last part of the interview is probably the most interesting, where he talks a bit about embracing the darkness and moderation. (But, be warned, he does start talking about how it's "all about the Kabbalah".. tongue )

I think it would be more accurate to say that professionalism and careerism has hurt creativity in modern music. The kind of people the money love to deal with, people who are always professional, hard working, always on time, responsible... how many great artists have you ever met like that? Yet those adjectives seem to describe most bands these days. Bands quit doing drugs so they could be more professional.

I don't know many musicians, but the artists I do know, theatre artists, the best ones are the most professional, punctual, organized and hard working.
