Some-time Janes Addiction/Porno for Pyros frontman and Lollapalooza founder Perry Farrell has a prescription for the ills of modern music, literally.

Speaking about music, Farrell said: “If you look at the great art movements, everyone's dabbled and experimented... I'm going to preface that by saying addiction is stupid...

But the lack of experimentation is affecting the music today, and, as a result, the music is stale. They need to break on through.

But, you know what, I'm sick of the people that are sober. I think sobriety is wrong... You're supposed to party on Friday night, and, if you don't, you're going against God's wishes,"

He also feels that drugs haven't spoiled his good looks:

He continued: "I feel that I lost 15 years worth of intensive efforts, but I look great. That's one thing that surprises me.

...he then excused himself from the interview, saying he had to finish shopping for a shiny gold leotard to go with the purple boots and neon feather-boa he planned to wear for that night's performance.

What board game is that from?

The real hipsters like Ginsberg and Zappa found ways to put themselves on sound financial footing but without surrendering themselves to mediocrity via the "cube village".

Whoa, you know I kinda agree with ol' Perry (ne' Simon Bernstein) on this one, at least as far as the staleness of modern music is concerned. I only listen to a fraction of new music because it MAKES ME ILL and scared to see and hear what young people today think is 'good' or, God forbid, 'cool.' And, btw, I am fairly young myself. Take the worst emo bands (I can't tell, myself) and open their minds with some drugs and let's wait for the twisted masterpieces to start rolling in. I bet they'll be less concerned with mom, dad, girls and school anyways. Sure, only half would make it out with their minds but....well...it'd be giving them way too much credit to think they have them now.

I think Perry might be on to something here, I'm quite sober and I can't play an instrument to save my life. Then again I couldn't play any better when I was all hopped up on goofballs and what have you. Plus, if I stuck around drinking and trying to play long enough I'd probably puke on your shoes or steal your dog or something.

I would dissagree with Perry on the drug part but I think the large amount of people on antidepressants may have affected the creativity of young people. Raging hormones make good music.

I think it would be more accurate to say that professionalism and careerism has hurt creativity in modern music. The kind of people the money love to deal with, people who are always professional, hard working, always on time, responsible... how many great artists have you ever met like that? Yet those adjectives seem to describe most bands these days. Bands quit doing drugs so they could be more professional.
