Motörhead frontman Lemmy took time off from his band's 30th anniversary tour to speak about the danger of heroin at the National Assembly for Wales with Conservative AM William Graham. The metal legend had recently spoken in a BBC 4 documentary about his hatred of the drug, a subject he returned to at the meeting:

his hatred of the drug was so strong he once turned in a dealer to the police, who then went to jail. But he said the dealer was freed in about six months.

Lemmy said: "It turns them into thieves and liars.

"It removes them from the social circle. All they are thinking about is junk.

Lemmy certainly has an alternative solution to the one presently being tried William Graham AM.

"They will do anything. They will sell everything they've got and steal yours and sell that."

...but Lemmy recognized that legalization was for the best:

"You can't keep people from doing what makes them feel good. The reason they do heroin in the first place is because of the oblivion it gives them."

Which was, perhaps, not quite what Graham wanted him to say:

Mr Graham said Lemmy presented "alternative" views to his own, but the message was firmly against drugs.

The AM told the briefing in Cardiff Bay that that young people would listen to Lemmy more than any committee.

Of course they will. He's God.

Legalise all drugs. Remove the criminal tag and the criminal element. Combat the stigma. Offer effective treatment.

Maintain current policy. Make criminals out of addicts. Fuel the majority of other crime. Stigmatise addicts to the point they daren't seek treatment. Destroy the family base of addicts through stigmatisation. Be too afraid to offer effective treatment for fear of offending middle England Daily Mail readers. Continue the cycle of crime and violence.

He once claimed on a tv interview that it helps him hit the right notes that way. He probably gives a different answer every time he's asked the question.

I agree. A regulated drugs industry would benefit society. Unfortunately I don't see it becoming a reality anytime soon. Politicians are far too weak and conservative to legislate radical reform. Although the indisputable advantages may outweigh the wider 'moral' concerns in the long term.

Yes, why change from a progression of failed tacts when you can simply bury your head in the sand and pander to the chattering classes? Makes sense to me.

If you leagalise it though people will only find something else to do which they should not. Although i agree just legalise it to take out the criminal element i'm still wondering what all those loverly drugs dealers are going to do with there time ?? steal cars ? mug old ladies ?

legalization is better than wasting billions every year to fight drugs. treat it like cigarettes, tax the shit out of it, and the government could make money on drugs instead of wasting it. the war on drugs is about as futile as the was on terror.
