I had it in my hand when I was cd shopping down South st.... and it was $8 and I was like "maybe ..I should.... NAH" and plopped it back on the shelf. What does "boombox" version mean? Why cant they just release all unrealesed stuff all at once and get it over with. Its dumb. I won't buy it(I think) confused

I think that the Nirvana box set should have been more like a couple of other box sets I can think of from monumental bands that only made a few albums: Peel Slowly and See, the Velvet Underground box, and Heart and Soul, the Joy Division box set. That is, I would have liked the official LP's, along with B-sides, to be collected in one place, remastered, with other unreleased stuff. (One thing I would have loved to see: just as the version of the Velvets' third album in the box is the "closet mix" Lou Reed did, I'd have liked the version of In Utero in this box to be Steve Albini's original mix.) As it is, it's a bunch of stuff that's kind of interesting to go through a few times, but I don't really listen to it now.

I agree. The Joy Division Heart and Soul box set is my pride and joy. It's amazing! love.

Does anyone else think that 'previously unrealeased' stuff was 'previously unreleased' for a freakin reason? Corporate fuck-bags.

It means it was recorded on a boombox in a practice session. Which means it probably sounds pretty rough.

Nirvana fans are really being bled dry. First there was the best-of album, with all that horrible slick remastering done to it, the only plus being the unreleased You Know You're Right. Then there was the With the Lights Out box set which included loads of stuff - but not the electric version of You Know You're Right, which means if you want that you have to get the shitty little best-of. And now if you want the demo version of Spank Thru and Sappy and the rehearsal recording of Come As You Are you've got to buy this, which includes songs from a box set you may have already bought.

As if there isn't enough money being made off of Nirvana royalties already.

Having said that, when it's good, it's awesome. See: Elliott Smith's unreleased work, some of Jeff Buckley's unreleased work.

Nirvana released a quite a few 'previously unreleased' songs when Kurt was still alive. I believe most of their singles have one un-released song on them. My favorite of the 'previously unreleased' is Moist Vagina. They did the no alternative soundtrack and the beavis and butthead soundtrack. I think that most of the time, when something is previously unreleased, its due to the fact that there wasn't any room on it when a band was making an album, or because the song was recorded when an album wasn't being put out. NOw the home recordings on this box set, thats a whole different level of being unreleased and invading peoples privacy.

Why does Nirvana need a greatest hits for anyway? Is their vast catalog of three studio albums and one of covers (?) too much for people to listen to? You can find their entire catalog used for less than the boxed set.
