when you listen to music in your rooom, with headphones on, walking down the road etc etc...do you hear voices? when im listening in my room withthe music up load it always sounds as though poeple are shouting up the stairs at me. so i turn my music down and shout "yes....? what do you want?" and i either get no reply or a "i didnt say anything".

highly annoying.

Yep. It's lovely, your brain wants you to hear them so badly it makes things up. Given a track of pure white noise, people can pick out whole phrases and even sentences. I make music that depends on the fact that human perception isn't passive.

I'm not really sure of the physical mechanisms. Human sense have an integrated predictive system, though. Your brain is anticipating what it thinks will happen based on experience, narrowing down every possibility until the last moment when it actually happens. This can lead to confusion, because when you get incomplete information, your brain will have already made up the missing pieces to a large extent, which is just one of the reasons eyewitness testimony is unreliable.

Within this, our senses look for meaning in everything even when we're not paying attention. Once you learn to read, when you see words, you can't not read them. Similarly, it's in your eyes to seek out faces in objects (especially when light is low), and your ears seek voices in noise.

I would guess it evolved because it keeps us slightly (if inaccurately) ahead of our competition.

Only if no one is talking to you.

I find it to be a much bigger problem when there IS someone talking to me and I don't seem to hear them.

I think you're safe as long as those voices aren't telling you to kill anyone. Or coming from the dog next door. robot

There's a bit of revrb or something in a Dr Dre track which would always make me pause it to see what the noise coming from the other room was. I can't recall exactly which one now, so if I put it on I'd proberly make the same "mistake". It took me a long time to train myself to ignore it and remember it was a quirk in the track.

You're OK as long as you don't have conversations with them. That's coming from a psychologist so it has to be true. Right?

Happens to me all the time, hearing shit while listening to headphones. Occassionally I think I hear stuff when I'm alone and it's quiet, but it's rare. I think I see things that turn out not to be there as well. I guess I have the crazy person trifecta.

We're addicted to patterns. It's important to evolution because it allows you to repeat successful actions and not repeat harmful ones. Water on plants = plants grow. Watering plants = good. Hand in fire = burned hand. That's bad.
