Just in time for the next season of The OC, The Shins are recording a new album:

The band recently entered their home studio (located in frontman James Mercer's basement) with reliable producer Phil Ek, who manned the boards on 2003's Chutes Too Narrow. As of right now, very little progress has been made on their as-yet-untitled third album, with drum tracks being laid down this week, but Pitchfork will keep you updated on the status of what is likely to become the soundtrack to any number of 2006/2007 romantic comedies concerning quirky contemporary twentysomethings.

I might one day go as high as five, but I really don't know what that would do to you, so let's just start with what we have. What did this do to you? Tell me. And remember, this is for posterity, so... be honest. How do you feel?

I think you'll regret admitting this:

coldplay has some great songs on that show, like Fix You.

more than you'll regret anything else, on these boards at least.

That said, I am giddy at the thought of a new Shins album.

No no no. Personally, I don't listen to them often, because I'm not often in a sort of pleasant, mid-tempo mood. But they're good.

But really... have the Shins ever changed ANYBODY's life? What a silly silly line to put in a movie...

Hardly the band's fault, though!
