Heretofore, cartoon supergroup Gorillaz had only played the rare live gig from behind a screen, but at a series of November dates in Manchester, NME reports that the band will "reveal all and take to the stage":

"Manchester is the centre of Britain, we're only ever going to do this once so it makes sense to do it somewhere in the middle of the country," explained Albarn of the shows. "London gets all the gigs. It's time to do something a bit different to readdress the balance. We're very excited to be getting all the guests artists together in one place for these shows."

The shows will be used to promote the planned Manchester International Festival, scheduled for 2007, and will feature many of the band's Demon Days collaborators, including Roots Manuva and Shaun Ryder.

Personally, I'd rather see the cartoons.

They arn't really giving it up. This isn't going to be an (inter)national tour. Demon Days is rather good and I can only assume getting all the musical talent from that one album to assemble and perform would be quite a treat.

That's like saying "I'm gonna make my famous recipe without any spices this time."

It might work, it's not likely.

I'm still disappointed they ever told us who they are. I mean, what's the point of having these characters if we know who's behind them? Then again, I'm still pissed that Kiss took off their makeup - ever.

Their show in Chicago a couple years ago was fantastic. It worked out far better than I expected.

Yes, but speculation with out any actual proof is fine. They have told us, flat out, who they are. The Residents are the only ones who have done this properly.

as far as i know they actually gave interviews promoting the band when gorillaz first started. (the real bandmembers that is not the cartoons)
without all the inital promotion and interviews done to get the audience interested in the cartoon band it probably would have never taken off.
so i think it was pretty clear who they were right from the start.

i remember watching the singer talk about the project and how the cartoons were going to be the front for it, that's what got me interested in it in the first place.
that was right before the first cd was released.

Right. What I'm saying is that I wish that this had never occurred. I like mystery. You are right, there is more than a slight chance that they never would have 'taken off', as it were, without the benefit of the humans behind the songs. But damn if I (personally) wouldn't have been more interested if I had to say things like, "That 2-D guy sounds exactly like Damon Albarn, but I don't know for sure if it is." Again, I like mystery.

I tend to agree. I mean, I'd know it was Damon Albarn either way, and I'd have known their first album collaberators, mostly, but still. It's more fun if they're the cartoon band and not people voicing cartoons.

i still consider it the cartoon band anyway, gorillaz grew way beyond the musicians voicing them.
maybe that's part of why they're having this concerned, they're tired of being overshadowed by some toons.
