Perhaps the worst thing that can happen to a band of less than Coldplay levels of fame is to have their beloved van or trailer -- with all their gear inside -- stolen. And it happens more often than we'd like. A crappy van full of thousands of dollars of equipment parked behind a dark club in a bad neighborhood makes an inviting target.

It happened to the Brian Jonestown Massacre in New York City:

Okay folks, so apparently a relatively tragic thing has happened tonight. In Brooklyn, before the BJM's Bowery Ballroom show, the band's van along with the U-haul trailer containing ALL OF THE BANDS EQUIPMENT was stolen. People I guess have hustled to get stuff together for them to play the gig tonight but that leaves Anton, Rickey, Frankie, Collin, and Dan without a vehicle and most importantly, without all of their precious musical instruments and amplifiers.

So do them a favor, if you could:

If everyone in the area (or even not so close) keeps an eye out at pawn shops, music stores, private sellers, and even e-bay for this missing gear- it could help eventually track some of it down.

There's a partial list of some of the missing items at the link, and a message from BJM singer Anton Newcombe to the thieves:

i hope you burn my gear...because you will be dead if anyone ever sees you playing any of it...no really,it's all one of a kind. dead.

I remember when this happened to Sonic Youth a few years back (mebbe more than a few)...

If you could also search local pawn shops of Anton Newcombes sense of reality, that'd be good, too.

Keith, your link is broken (at the moment). This is all I get:

phpBB : Critical Error

Could not connect to the database

Although it's entirely possible that that's a temporary problem.

After the bad attitude Anton has displayed to many people (including an almost fist fight he started with yours truly for no appparent reason about three years ago), I think you can easily call this karma.

I think it is, because if you go to the main page and click on their link, it gives the same error, but it worked earlier.

Couldn't happen to a nicer guy. Though I do feel bad for the other guys in the band - but I feel bad for anyone who gets sucked into Anton's world. Talent is not an absolution of assholery.

Damn it. I figured this'd be one of those one-sided "isn't that awful? threads where everyone basically agrees that it shouldn't have happened. I was halfway done writing in my head my "This never would have happened if they auctioned off their equipment and donated the proceeds to Hurricane Katrina victims and then went acoustic" diatribe.

It's tricky given what bands like them get paid to play, but it'd be in their best interest to have someone who just moves/watches the equipment along for the ride. Or have the T shirt guy only watch the booth while the equipment is in the club. Then again, the only money these bands tend to make is off the shirts.

no one deserves to have there equipment stolen unless they stole equipment from other people. stealing from guitar center is one thing...

That's so eye for an eye. Maybe it was someone who had something out for this Anton guy. When you walk on other people, other people sometimes walk on you in return, so that fits your theory about having equipment stolen too.
